Misplaced Female Narrator

The story was a bit drawn out, particularly the pendulum of Bristol’s misplaced reasons why the relationship wouldn’t work. Jakobi did a good job but the female narrator was hard to listen to. She read as if she were a puppeteer in pain.

The character dynamics were off-putting but realistic in the small circles of the entertainment world. The exploration of one’s emotions and the need for acceptance was well played after siphoning through the female narrator’s poor perfoemance.

The performance was good however the story was long and drawn out. I found myself disappointed throughout as newly introduced characters were thrust in to fill voids. The story could’ve been so much better had the author rid the book of all the “fluff”. The mystery was revealed in a rushed last five minutes of the book where it seems the author finally realized that things had to be wrapped up.

This is a slow read with a decent storyline. The performances were OK, but sometimes boring and underwhelming. The ending was absolutely horrible, the author left so many unanswered questions. It’s as if she got a call and never came back to the line.

Brenda Jackson did a good job of capturing the essence of family: the family that is and the families we choose. The reunion(s) was/were spot on with humor, healthy does of mess, secrets, love and shame. It was a good read, it reminds us that traditions can change, we sometimes have to respectfully put elders in their places and that we love each other through it all.

Best memoir I’ve ever read

Viola Davis is vulnerable, honest, poignant and powerful. The courage to allow others a view of this journey is painstakingly riveting. Her truths are yours and mine, her triumphs are beyond inspirational.

Mrs. Davis is a remarkable woman, she’s overcome so much; rather than basking in her shortcomings, she allowed them to fuel her successes. I am more inspired after reading this book than I’ve been in years. It seems her voice spoke directly to me, my only complaint is I wanted more. Not because the book was lacking but because she gave so much of herself.

Hearing Viola’s voice gave the book so much life. The inflections, emotions and sheer passion or pain rendered me speechless at times. It felt as though I was in those rooms with her. I actually bought a hard copy as well. Thank you Mrs. Davis for allowing us to SEE YOU!

This guy is truly amazing, he paints a canvas filled with vulnerability and transparency. The book journeys through his tumultuous childhood, then it takes you on a musical ride filled with record breaking firsts. From there he finds love, self and success, he loses it all then finds it on a greater scale while losing sight of self…again.

He’s forced to revisit the light that was of his GiGi after accomplishing more than most even dream of as he realizes that fame does not equate to happiness. Will always knew that he was destined for greatness even when that very idea was unimaginable.

His courageous revelations of his deepest fears spoke to my soul. Will invites you into his life without the protection of cover knowing that judgement is imminent. The brilliance of his mind was captured beautifully in this book, it’s one of the best that I’ve ever read. There are so many lessons and takeaways, I am truly inspired.

The story overview immediately intrigued me however I advanced forward in the first couple of chapters because it was so slow. But once the prevalent characters were revealed the journey began. This book tugs at every emotion you didn’t even know you had. Some things were unnecessarily drawn out which is why I gave it four stars but overall it’s a good read. The audacity of the love story and actions of the characters makes it a page turner.

Whitney’s story is both painful and inspirational. Robin not only honored her friend but took great care of her beautifully tragic life. This books shows that even the most beautiful, most talented and those who “appear” to have God’s favor often suffer with addiction, depression, disconnectedness and loneliness. It was a page turner, I couldn’t wait to hear the next chapter. Bravo to Robin for telling their story in her own time, in her own way.

Inspiration for Generations to Come

Common it's so refreshing to see a Black man allow himself to be vulnerable and transparent. Our culture teaches men not to cry, not show emotion and to always appear strong. Your strength jumps off of the pages via your courageous truths. This will give voice to a generation who otherwise would be too disconnected, too hip, too prideful or too 'manly' to allow others to see their flaws. The relationship you thought you had vs. the relationship you seek to have with your daughter offers both a learning experience about honest communication and encouragement for those who think it's too late to save/enhance relationships. Thank you for sharing your journey and the approach you take to some of the most difficult situations you and many others have faced. Great read!
