Historia
The year is 1739. Eliza Lucas is sixteen years old when her father leaves her in charge of their family’s three plantations in rural South Carolina and then proceeds to bleed the estates dry in pursuit of his military ambitions. Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, just a short way down the coast, are rising, and slaves are starting to become restless. Her mother wants nothing more than for their South Carolina endeavor to fail so they can go back to England. Soon her family is in danger of losing everything.

ICK, somehow simplistic and offensive
Revisado: 03-17-24
The simplistic descriptions of slavery gave me the ick. Every character is a stereotype - plucky 16 year old protagonist who just wants to prove herself worthy; stern but loving father, deploring slavery but explaining how 'necessary' it was; hypochondriac mother who just wants the protagonist to be married, scary overseer too interested in the female slaves; kindly elderly neighbor sharing his knowledge and seeds; loving mammy figure, and of course, the primitive childhood best-friend who had the plant knowledge, but just happened to be a slave.
I made it to chapter 8 and I'm quitting now before it gets worse.

Historia
Major Robert Kurland has returned to the quiet vistas of Kurland St. Mary to recuperate from the horrors of Waterloo. However injured his body may be, his mind is as active as ever. Too active, perhaps. When he glimpses a shadowy figure from his bedroom window struggling with a heavy load, the tranquil façade of the village begins to loom sinister....

Author has done her research. No anachronistic attitudes to spoil the story. Not my favorite narrator but not grating, so overall okay

Historia
In teeming Victorian London, where lavish wealth and appalling poverty live side by side, Edward Pierce charms the most prominent of the well-to-do as he cunningly orchestrates the crime of the century. Who would suspect that a gentleman of breeding could mastermind the daring theft of a fortune in gold? Who could predict the consequences of making the extraordinary robbery aboard the pride of England's industrial era, the mighty steam locomotive?

Fascinating delivery of a historic true crime story
Revisado: 01-29-24
I appreciated that we were treated to the period vocabulary, and that it was well explained, including who would or would not have understood it at that time. I learned a bit about railway development, thieves’ cant, socio-economic factors, early police work, and an exciting story. I was never tempted to skip forward and I think I will queue it up to listen again in another week or so

Engaging.
Revisado: 11-17-23
I know just enough of the Roman Empire to be pulled out of a story by anachronistic details. I was happy to realize at the end of this story that this didn’t happen. A purely enjoyable story with an excellent narrator who was able to differentiate voices without annoying affectation

When Amy and Effy Tribble, two charming but impoverished spinster sisters, lose out on a much needed inheritance, they place an advertisement in The Morning Post and hire themselves out as professional chaperones. Vowing to prepare even the most difficult misses for marriage, the Tribble sisters will spend a London season on each client in this delightful Regency series, The School for Manners. Felicity Baronsheath, their first assignment, turns out to be more of a challenge than they ever imagined.

Slow start,
Revisado: 08-13-23
Enjoyable story. It started slow but soon picked up. Sadly, about when it picked up is about when the worst of the mispronunciations started. I finished it because I’m a completest, but I had to stop and groan a few times.

As the youngest of four unmarried vicar's daughters, Frederica feared her destiny was to die of tedium in the sleepy village of Barton Sub Edge. Her looks deemed "unfortunate", her willful notions damned as "difficult", she never dreamt the arrival of a rake would challenge her fate in the most surprising way.

Historia
Certainly the two should never have met. The handsome, wealthy Marquess of Rockingham was the most notorious man in London, as infamous for his violent temper as he was for his intemperate ways. Miss Lucinda Westerville was a country vicar's daughter, as innocent as she was lovely and as proper as a young lady could possibly be. Yet when this improbably matched pair met at a glittering social ball, they had struck the dubious bargain to become man and wife.

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

Repetitive
Revisado: 05-15-22
First half is a discussion of processed vs whole foods. It may be valuable information for some but I feel like it was a recap of what we hear daily. Second half feels like a recap of the author’s previous book “mini habits”. If I was going to recommend one I’d recommend this one over the first because this gives you the recap with specifics on how to implement the process with food as well as exercise, but if you’ve already read that one, this will be repetition. I liked the first book but was disappointed I bought both.
The narrator uses slooowww speech to add emphasis. It becomes annoying. I finally switched to listening at 1.3x which made it sound normal. The few times his narration noticeably speeded up for a sentence or two that he wasn’t emphasizing, it only served to cement the benefit of deliberately speeding up the rest.
