Bradbury, yes. Narrator, no.
Revisado: 02-20-23
Ray Bradbury is great as always.
This narrator is not to my taste.
If you like your books performed, acted out, like a play then you might like this. I don't. I prefer to hear a straightforward, not bland, reading with some intonation for different voices and so on. Reading a book is about using your imagination to embellish and create more than that. A reader like this takes that all away. Clearly he put a lot of work into this narration. Maybe he loves Ray Bradbury as much as I do and just got carried away. But I quickly got tired of feeling like I was being shouted at during an emotional scene or hearing another overblown dialect.
This is the only Audible book I have gotten that I really wish I had returned.

In a moving story of sacrifice and triumph, human scientists establish a relationship with intelligent lifeforms - the cheela-living on Dragon's Egg, a neutron star where one Earth hour is equivalent to hundreds of their years. The cheela culturally evolve from savagery to the discovery of science, and for a brief time, men are their diligent teachers.

Thought provoking and entertaining.
Revisado: 09-19-22
I'm a big fan of Robert L. Forward, a scientist writing science fiction. I read this originally when I was much younger. I enjoyed it just as much now as then. Very interesting to try and imagine what it would be like to live in a different environment and the environmental rules that would bring with it. The narrator was top notch. Very easy to understand. His tone and manner of speaking perfectly fits this kind of story. I'm sure I will go on and enjoy the other installments once again.

Some good stories
Revisado: 06-19-22
Its all a matter of taste. I love short stories, SF and older ones too. But there are other collections that overall I enjoyed much more. None of them were bad or poor. The narrators were very good and understandable.

Historia
The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....

A superb reading of a superb story.
Revisado: 10-10-21
This has long been one of my most favorite stories. I first read it a long time ago and maybe another time in-between. The characters are so engaging and realistically fleshed out. They are also a good cross section of how people might or would act in this situation. There are no plot holes or reality gaps, that I can see, except for a couple of small ones that don't impact the story. The narrator did a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life. He had exactly the right tone for reading this kind of story. He spoke clearly and was easy to understand. I'm certainly going to look for more books that he has narrated. Even if you have already read this book, I think you will enjoy this reading. I did.

Every story a great pick. Every narrator a gem.
Revisado: 08-07-21
I have read all these stories before. Some, more than once. But, to me, every single one of these narrators did a fine job on these stories. I don't know exactly who read what. But, I especially appreciated the one who did The Time Machine, one of my favorite stories.
They all did a fine job of maintaining the style of stories from that time, if you catch my meaning. Imagine the voice you would associate with stories like these, and you will find them here.
This collection is over 24hrs long. But, I was still sorry to reach the end.
I'm looking forward to more.

My title says it all. These are traditional stories about Robin Hood, and his Merry Men, told in the traditional way that you would expect. And with lots of feeling to boot. Highly enjoyable, IMO.
If you want some new retelling or re-imagining then you will have to look elsewhere.

Historia
Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Profound stories told by a master storyteller.
Revisado: 02-23-20
Ray Bradbury has been one of my top five favorite authors ever since I was a boy and first read "S is for Space" and "R is for Rocket" as well as his other books. His writing and meaning always speak to me, even now, 50+ years later. While I have read many of his books more than once, I have read "The Martian Chronicles" most of all.
I have sampled many audio versions over the years. None of them began to do these stories justice, IMO. Mark Boyett, however, tells (reads) them in such an understanding and powerful way. When I listen to him reading these stories, I almost feel like I did when I read them for the first time long ago. Not only does he fill the characters with new life, but he understands and has compassion for them as well. He definitely does them justice.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

A good, old fashioned, "What If?" story.
Revisado: 11-03-19
One of my favorite kinds of stories are where everything is the same as we are used to, except for one thing. What difference would that one thing make? This story fits that bill and is a nice length too. I wasn't familiar with this narrator, but enjoyed his reading of this story. He injected just enough drama to make it seem more real.

Historia
A vicious 15-year-old droog is the central character of this 1963 classic, a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. In Anthony Burgess' nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology.

Alex lives again! and all that cow.
Revisado: 06-03-18
To me, this is truly an inspired performance by Tom Hollander. Of course I had read the book and seen the movie more than once. However, Alex had never felt as real as he does in this audio book. I even found myself respecting him as a person, even though he was doing horrible things. He was smart, intelligent and never betrayed his ideas. These are all things that, in another context, we would highly value. The fact that law enforcement did even worse things than he did, was more obvious too. The whole idea of choice and the importance of choice were much more clearly brought out here as well.
All of this, to me, because Alex became a fully fleshed out person because of this reading. Thank you Tom Hollander.
Listen to the sample and see if you agree.
Note: I had no idea about the edited and shortened version of the book being released here in the US. That is what the movie was made from. So I was very glad to find out this is the full version. It also contains a forward and selected chapters read by Anthony Burgess.
