In generally a fan of this author, however this book seemed to lack the depth of character and plot development of her other works. There were several times that I had to make sure I didn't accidentally skip a chapter (or 3) because it seemed like chunks of the story was missing. I even checked (and double checked) that I didn't get an abridged version. There were opportunities to develop conflict, tension, or even a plot, but they were all left dangling.

I'm glad this was free through the Plus catalog. I would have been very disappointed had I wasted a credit on it.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick and fairly light listen, although it contained more substance than most chick-lit books. I appreciate K.A. Tucker's writing style and her ability to fully develop the characters. This was a bit of a departure from her "10 Tiny Breaths" series, but entertaining nonetheless.

My only criticism is that I wish there had been a bit more story development around the Catherine / Scott relationship after his return to Balsam. I feel there was missed opportunity for some drama in this area. Unless this particular story is to continue in a sequel, I was disappointed with the ending. It left a few loose ends and story opportunities on the table.

This book was very short, not only in time but also in content. It ended very abruptly without resolution (or with a very under developed resolution) to many of the conflicts presented in the book.

This is the first in a series and definitely reads as such...and not in a good way. It feels as though the author sacrificed development of this story in an attempt to set the stage for the remaining series. Unfortunately, it fell flat.

Good for those with a military background

I enjoyed the premise of this book -- that at some point in the future, the government colludes with international forces to force a "new world order". It provided much food for thought regarding the executive orders, both previously signed and those to be signed in the future, and how they may aid a rogue government in seizing the property and liberty of ordinary citizens for its benefit. The book also provided good insight into the minds of the armed forces members and how they can either be the catalyst for change or complicit in the government's tyrannical plans.

Unfortunately, the jargon and somewhat stilted talk in the book were both very militaristic. If one's interest lies in military talk like specific gun models and military jargon, this would be a great book. However, I found it a bit much for my own preferences. In addition, I feel like there were too many characters introduced in the book and found it difficult to keep track of all of them. The team from "the District", for example, could have been left out completely and/or perhaps further developed in a subsequent book. Reducing the number of main characters and more deeply developing a handful or so of the most central characters would have resulted in a stronger narrative.

William R. Forstchen's series on a pre-EMP world was well-written and realistic. This was a proper capstone piece to the series. However, I'm sad that it's over! I would love to know more about the process of rebuilding the government and re-unifying what was left of the United States after John's inauguration.

The premise of this book was great and the writing was equally as engaging. It was an engrossing read that was difficult to put down. I love the book while listening to it but felt a little deflated at the end. In retrospect, it seemed as though there were several opportunities to further develop the plot and introduce some game changing plot twists, but most of them simply fell flat. (For example, the reaction and response of the husband's family, involvement of The Innocence Project, the mayor's deliberation, etc.). The book was really good, but it could have been so much better!

The narrators were a good pick for the main roles. Although some complain about the narration of Grace, I feel like the unrefined edge to her voice was intentional and evoked the hardness that Grace had clearly developed through her years in prison. I feel that a softer narrator wouldn't have been true to her current character.

While the narrator did a great job with the material she was given, the writing in this book is atrocious. The book is plagued with poor grammar, nonsensical plot twists, and incomplete character development. It was painful to listen to because of the bad writing. I am thankful that I purchased this audio book at a discount because I had selected the book as my Kindle First pick for the month. However, I am very disappointed if this is the quality of work Amazon is promoting through it's Kindle First program.

Kristen Proby is officially on my Do Not Buy list...even if Sebastial York is narrating. I purchased this book along with book one in the series prior to a long trip. Both books were terribly disappointing. All the men were muscled hunks of masculine glory and all the women were near virginal, simpering idiots. 2/3 of the book is filled with gratuitous sex scenes. I fast forwarded through nearly every one of them and finished the book in record time. Thank God. It was horrible. There was absolutely no plot or character development, unless I missed something magical in the sex scenes...

I suppose somewhere between the gratuitous sex and the unnecessary cursing, there was a story line. However, I could not dig deep enough to find it. I bought this audiobook because of the male narrator. He is the only reason I listened to more than a few chapters. I regret this purchase. The writing is atrocious.

Would you try another book from Danielle Steel and/or Angela Dawe?

I am glad I purchased this audiobook on sale ($4.95), although it wasn't even worth that much. It was terribly written, as if the author got paid for the number of and's and but's used in the text. After the first few chapters, it was painful to listen to. The content was extremely repetitive and the story barely developed. It was almost as if the writer was given a plot outline and filled in the rest with repetitive, run-on sentences about how great everyone's life was and how much everyone loved each other. I never felt like more than a passive listener to the story. It lacked the depth required to draw the reader into the narrative.

Angela Dawe did a great job narrating the drivel she was given.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Happy Birthday?

Rather than cut, I would more fully develop the characters, their feelings, and their motives.

Any additional comments?

Danielle Steel's ability is sorely overrated. I will not read or listen to another one of her books again.
