It was ok and would have been great if this was my first exposure to fantasy. I’m not sure if it has been so over hyped that it did not hold up to expectations.

Not horrific horror

I like horror and the most horrific aspect of the book was the AI character and insanity system when the MC had visions implanted into his head. The rest was just more of a horror settings. In a litRPG system I find it hard to care for the survival of the MC. The area that fell short for me is that we had little not no connections with the victims. If we get another book in the series target peoples emotions more. The big positive about this book is the love for horror movies. It was much more of a fun ride down the history of horror cinema.

Audio and Performance:
Overall middle of the road with a few standout performances. I enjoyed all the most of the villains and the MCs voices and quality. The opening narrator had some odd sound issues either with modulation or sound proofing as I could not understand what was off with it.

Craft and quality:
Some of the transitions between the characters and scenes were fast and messy. I'm not sure if this was the writing or the audio team.

I do hope we get another one as this is a very underutilized sub genre of a sub genre. But litrpg / dungeon core horror books seem too need to work extra hard to push that horror factor. I give it 3 screams out of 10 but a 7 out of 10 in fun.

Another paranormal romance

I was very excited when I saw one of my favorite authors writing a vampire litrpg. But this really should just fall into paranormal romance. I can't cast blame him,the romance genre is where the money is at and I wish him success. I enjoyed the writing but the aspects that make a good litrpg were extremely light. I feel the intrigue was good and the taste of the world is interesting enough to have people wanting more. But for me this is just another paranormal romance and not something I would sink my fangs into. I'm just not the audience for paranormal romance but would have been down for a litrpg vampire series as we don't currently have one on the market.

Middle of the road and overhyped

I got this based off a recommendation and it was ok at best. The audio and the recording was done well but the story fell flat.

Pros: Neat focus on necromancy between female leads. Different groups had different specialties and there was a good amount of setup for hidden secrets to be discover in the future. Again solid recording and audio quality on this project. The root concept and core elements setup the series for the possibility of an epic opera.

Cons: This was a stereo typical dystopian teenage girl story we have seen again and again with some gender switching and this core idea has just been done to death to a point that necromancy will not help it. The largest issue is the setting was extremely forced and could have been easily replaced as it was irrelevant. It feels like a editor or feedback team ask for something to be different so we made an irrelevant setting. The best way I was able to explain it to my wife that reads a lot of historical romance is that it was a Historical Romance taking place in the modern day but in a re-enactment village. All the major plot points are fairly obvious and you will likely seem them coming a mile away. The magic or super science of necromancy is minimally developed on how the systems really works. This is the same for the setting with minimal amount of effort on world building for this book. Lastly it is just another dystopian competition that part of the community just seems to be eating up but has very little substance and in a highly overhyped book.

This had the bone work for a really interesting story but decayed into a bland predicable story going the safe route into mediocrity.

Tao Wong and Nick Podehl deliver the same level of quality as seen in the earlier books of this series. This is the start of a new arch and really resetting the power level expectations as our hero. Whom has left earth to adventure amongst the stars and finds that he still has a lot of short comings and tries to navigate the alien geopolitical ecosystem.

Immortality Issues

I have 633 books in my audible library and Garon Whited's Nightlord series is in my top favorites.

Narration: Our narrator is Sean Runnette covering 423 entries on audible at this time. Notably he also covers all of Mark Tufo's books and falls into the higher tier of audio narrators. His pronunciations are always on point and I have never caught any poor audio mark. He is also able to capture the audio range well from male to female and young to old as well as regional inflections.

Sunset is an epic tale logging in near 40hrs of highs, lows and humorous moments with this first book being just the beginning. What you will not be getting a fan fiction hack and slasher where the hero has a harem so reader beware.

Our hero(Eric) is a normal blue collar college professor that is living a simple and content life as part of his American dream. He is an intellectual that enjoys learning and teaching as many professors do with little to no aspirations of grandeur or wealth as he chose to go into higher learning. You have likely encountered a similar soul during your college career.

Eric is a man, a professor and a (nightlord)vampire that has to deal with a new reality but retrains himself without doing a massive character shift that could have happen with many in his place. He also has to deal with Immortality Issues of time moving forward and trying to keep the natural balance. But like many hero's journey greatness is pushed on him and all he wants is to be left alone to do with own thing. Most of the book is set in medieval fantasy setting the Eric learning and exploring this world. Garon does have the habit of crushing your soul with his endings so you will not be getting a happily ever after, just a FYI.

You might have noticed Vampire, urban fantasy and fantasy words used tied to this series but to be clear this is not a paranormal romance. The few romantic interludes all have a point and are done in a classy way. These vampire do not sparkle, are not the horror creations from 30 days of night or 13 bullets. We are also not looking at phycological tension found in Fevre Dream or The Historian. Lastly these Nightlords are not the action packaged pulp fiction Kurtherian Gambit or CW turned to eleven Demon Accords. All of those have their place and enjoyable to the correct audience. The Nightlord vampire are tied to the natural order set into motion by the powers at be. They have more powers and weaknesses then many other incarnations I have seen. That said the framework is fairly open for exploration as is the true backstory of the Nightlords.

This book also plays with the Stargate, Super Natural and Star Trek idea of the adventure / monster of the week with a multiverse system. The great thing about this is that the adventure could be endless or until the author determines he wants to conclude the story.

Also keep an eye on the Sasha story as I believe there is a greater mystery that could unfold with it.
