Historia
After being murdered, his consciousness dormant and unaware of the passing of time while confined in an elaborate water trap, Kai wakes to find a lesser mage attempting to harness Kai’s magic to his own advantage. That was never going to go well. But why was Kai imprisoned in the first place? What has changed in the world since his assassination? And why does the Rising World Coalition appear to be growing in influence? Kai will need to pull his allies close and draw on all his pain magic if he is to answer even the least of these questions.

Incredibly imaginitive tale of politics and personalities
Revisado: 10-28-24
Wells deftly weaves two narratives, set decades apart, that parallel and collide with one another. The horrors of an empire built on dark magic mirror the machinations of those clinging to power after its defeat. Through it all a small group of allies forged into family through tragedy and rebellion struggle not to lose more than they already have.
I'm unfamiliar with Wells' scifi series, but this foray into fantasy is a showcase of masterful storytelling, with clever magic, complex politics, and deep characters.
The narrator is mostly excellent, but the occasional long pause in the middle of a sentence was distracting.

Historia
For centuries, the kingdom of Iraden has been protected by the god known as the Raven. He watches over his territory from atop a tower in the powerful port of Vastai. His will is enacted through the Raven's Lease, a human ruler chosen by the god himself. His magic is sustained via the blood sacrifice that every Lease must offer. And under the Raven's watch, the city flourishes. But the power of the Raven is weakening. A usurper has claimed the throne. The kingdom borders are tested by invaders who long for the prosperity that Vastai boasts.

Amzing story brought to life by masterful narrator
Revisado: 05-29-19
Ann Leckie has taken the familiar threads of courtly politics and betrayal and woven them with a fascinating conceit of animistic gods. She invites you into the story of a colorful and intriguing cast of characters as they grapple with turmoil and doubt. The two storylines of the book lead slowly but carefully towards a realization of the truth behind all that is happening.
Eolo is a wonderful protagonist. Ann has eschewed the usual fearless, brave, reckless hero for a man who is quietly thoughtful, humbly competent, and steadfast even as he is desperately frightened.
The narrating character too sets the book apart. They are deliberate and implacable in a way that makes their moments of action even more satisfying. (I say this vaguely so as not to detract from the experience)
Lastly, the narrator. Adjoa Andoh gives life to the characters with her countless unique voices. The range of emotion she captures in both vibrant and subtle ways is breathtaking. She sets a tone for the book that elevates it and carries the reader along on this magnificent tale.
