Historia
Agatha Christie revelled in the use of poison to kill off unfortunate victims in her books; indeed, she employed it more than any other murder method, with the poison itself often being a central part of the novel. Her choice of deadly substances was far from random—the characteristics of each often provide vital clues to the discovery of the murderer. Christie's extensive chemical knowledge provides the backdrop for A Is for Arsenic, in which Kathryn Harkup investigates the poisons used by the murderer in fourteen classic Agatha Christie mysteries.

You will want to go back and reread her books!
Revisado: 12-14-24
Agatha Christie trained as a dispenser and learned a great deal about poisons. She worked this knowledge into many of her books and while I have read all of them (some more than once) having read the inspiration for them sent me back to read many of them again. She was the Queen of Crime - no one will ever top her.

Historia
Vicky, Alice, Helena, and Beatrice were historically unique sisters, born to a sovereign who ruled over a quarter of the earth's people and who gave her name to an era: Queen Victoria. Two of these princesses would themselves produce children of immense consequence. All five would curiously come to share many of the social restrictions and familial machinations borne by 19th-century women of less-exulted class.

I read the physical book years ago and wanted to listen to it again. Big mistake. The narrator is awful - a monotone who completely ignores punctuation marks.

M. C. Beaton must be spinning in her grave!
Revisado: 03-07-24
Because I love Hamish McBeth and Agatha Raisin, I was willing to take on the R. W. Green entries under her name. So far they have been okay, but this one is a major stinker! The story was so convoluted that I was never quite sure where he was going with it. Worse than the story was the narrator!!! The voice was way too old for Hamish and there is NOTHING that sets my teeth on edge than when I hear a Brit try to use an American accent. It was positively cringe worthy. If this is what we have to look forward to, then I am done.

Listen to John Nettles!
Revisado: 11-05-23
The intro to each of these Inspector Barnaby books is by John Nettles, THE Inspector Barnaby. I have seen the television series so many times that I didn't think these would be that good, but John Nettles changed my mind. Even if you think you know these stories by heart you are very wrong. The books delve into the characters so much better than the TV series. I absolutely loved all of them and will definitely listen to them again. These are a can't miss series!

Her Magnum Opus
Revisado: 11-05-23
Anne Tyler has always been a tricky author. Some of her books are wonderful and some leave me scratching my head at the ending. However, The Accidental Tourist is, in my opinion, the best book she has ever written. It's one I have read more than once and I really enjoyed this listen. The only thing that would have made it perfect would have been the late William Hurt doing the narration.

Just when the story got going...
Revisado: 06-06-22
I love some of Anne Tyler's books. Accidental Tourist is my all-time favorite. This one falls into the category that I call "Deep Thinking Books". The story really has no resolution - you are supposed to think about it afterwards and figure it out for yourself. Needless to say I was mad as hell when the story abruptly ended. Were there pages missing???? I don't know if I will get involved with Anne again.

Ken Follett is like Elizabeth George. Getting involved with one of his books is a committment. The story could have been much better if a good editor had been allowed to cull out the fluff.

Revisado: 05-14-22
I wish this book was at least ten times longer because I could listen to Bailey White all day. The stories are hilarious as well as touching in the way that only someone from the real South can tell them. As a fellow teacher the stories about the Titanic and the Vikings went straight to my heart. If only there were more!!!

Not an easy listen but an important one.
Revisado: 05-14-22
Elizabeth George books are a commitment. They are long and intense. This one tackles a very serious and unfortunately still occurring tradition of female genital mutilation. The story could have been shorter but overall the book is very good. I felt like something had run over me by the end but still... It was not my favorite of her books but it was very good. If you have MANY hours to kill or need a listen for a cross-country drive, this is it.
