Historia
In 1970, the future of one of Mississippi's more colorful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered. Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper. The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courtroom, but it came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him.

A welcome return to form
Revisado: 04-27-06
Over time, Grisham's books have become less and less appealing. They start well but fade badly, and often any tension dissipates about halfway through. However, this was a wonderfully atmospheric story, well read and easily able to sustain interest over the unabridged length. Unfortunately, The Broker turned out to be more like his other recent work.

Splendid effort all round
Revisado: 04-27-06
I share something in common with the author of this book, apparently, in that I know absolutely nothing about the US Army. As a result, mistakes of detail didn't trouble me. The story was much more complex and interesting than I had anticipated, and the reader was brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Historia
Peter Hayle is a young attorney with a lot to prove. Crossing his father, one of Portland's most powerful lawyers, was a costly mistake. Now, cut loose from his job and from his inheritance, Peter has landed in the public defender's office of a small Oregon town - and in the middle of a high-profile case that could make or break his career. His mentally retarded client, accused of the savage murder of a college coed, faces the death penalty. And Peter faces a choice - between the compulsion to save himself and the courage to save his client - in a devastating trial by fire.

A guilty pleasure
Revisado: 01-22-06
Campbell Scott (what a fine Scottish name!) reads this story with well-judged dramatic emphasis. The story builds to a surprise climax, and in general it works very well. At one stage, however, it takes a turn which can generously be described as supremely daft, in a police interrogation scene. Ordinarily it would turn me completely off but for some reason I really like this audiobook and couldn't do so. This is why it is a guilty pleasure - it's embarrassing to admit how much I like it but there it is!

Unbearably tense
Revisado: 01-22-06
Richard North Patterson here wrings every drop of tension out of a tremendous story, culminating in an ending which could not come soon enough. Beautifully read, this is a fantastic audiobook, but the sound quality is very poor, even at the highest byte level. Don't expect to find the characters particularly likeable, but get into the story and you're away!

Historia
A decade ago, The Bonfire of the Vanities defined an era - and established Tom Wolfe as the prime fictional chronicler of America at its most outrageous and alive. Now Wolfe is back with a pitch-perfect, coast-to-coast portrait of our wild and woolly, no-holds-barred, multifarious country on the cusp of the millennium.

An amazing piece of work
Revisado: 12-30-05
This book, which I had read and thus knew already, was an extremely enjoyable listen. The reading by David Ogden Stiers was extraordinary, and did full justice to a unique story and the characters therein.
Wonderful!

Fine story bizarrely read
Revisado: 11-28-04
Sheldon Siegel is a good storyteller, and his central characters Mike Daley and his ex wife partner Rosie are excellent. He writes with pace and humour, and his courtrooms scenes do exactly what they are designed to do - move the story forward in an entertaining way. I thoroughly enjoyed this but I deducted a star because of the reading, which was eccentric at best. The reader's characterisation of the voices of Skipper Gates and the judge were just bizarre and a bit offputting. Otherwise, great stuff.
