Historia
A madman is holding Vitoria hostage, killing its citizens in brutal ways and staging the bodies. The city's only hope is a brilliant detective struggling to battle his own demons. Inspector Unai López de Ayala, known as "Kraken", is charged with investigating a series of ritualistic murders. The killings are eerily similar to ones that terrorized the citizens of Vitoria 20 years earlier. But back then, police were sure they had discovered the killer, a prestigious archaeologist who is currently in jail.

Intriguing Mystery in the Basque Country
Revisado: 05-05-24
The narrator can make or ruin an audiobook experience for me. This Narrator was a pleasure to listen to. Since this book is translated from Spanish, his accent helped set the sense of place. And hearing the names and places pronounced correctly greatly enhanced the experience. Also his voice is very pleasing to listen to, No irritating habits or vocal tics to jar the performance.
This book is described as a "serial killer murder mystery"... Not a genre I generally enjoy,
But it came so highly recommended I had to try it. And i'm very glad I did
Happily It reads much more likea combination of a police procedural and a love letter to the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Basque country and its people. The whole tale hangs beautifully together, despite moving backwards and forwards in time to follow various characters. The mystery eventually gets satisfyingly resolved (without uneccessary horror or gore) , still leaving one loathe reach the end and have to leave behind the region and the characters described between the pages. Great book. Worth the Audio Credits <3

Historia
A charming, romantic debut novel in which Jane Austen, heralded author, ends up time-traveling almost 200 years in the future. There she finds the love she's written about and the destiny she's dreamed of...but is it worth her legacy? Bath, England, 1803. At 28, Jane Austen prefers walking and reading to balls and assemblies; she dreams of someday publishing her carefully crafted stories. Already on the shelf and in grave danger of becoming a spinster, Jane goes searching for a radical solution - and as a result, seemingly by accident, time-travels.

Not for Austen fans
Revisado: 04-20-24
Sadly, the character of Jane in this book is not written up to the weight if the great author. She is missing all her sly wit and keen observation. And her revalations re 21st century quickly become tedious. This is just an OK time travel romance story.

Historia
Every great drink starts with a plant. Sake began with a grain of rice. Scotch emerged from barley. Gin was born from a conifer shrub when medieval physicians boiled juniper berries with wine to treat stomach pain. The Drunken Botanist uncovers the surprising botanical history and fascinating science and chemistry of over 150 plants, flowers, trees, and fruits (and even a few fungi).

Buy the Hardcopy, NOT the audiobook version
Revisado: 01-19-17
Would you try another book from Amy Stewart and/or Coleen Marlo?
Yes by Amy (love the hardcopy), no on the narration by Coleen.
Amy Stewart's book is very interesting, but sadly, Colleen Marlo's narration is not.
I bought the hardcopy of this book, which is great, I recommend it.
But give the audio-version a miss.
What didn’t you like about Coleen Marlo’s performance?
Pace is all wrong,...too fast and dry to make the material interesting. No sense of fun or curiosity comes through in the narration, which it does in the hardcopy.
This is a book about COCKTAILS for goodness sake, what could be more fun? But sadly, the audio-version is no fun at all.
Ms. Marlo should probably listen to some podcasts like the Dinner Party Download, to gain a better understanding of what it takes to make an audio version of a handy reference book like this come alive for an audience. Not a bad voice, just a lifeless delivery. And the producer(s)? Didn't they try to listen to it first before publishing? If the pacing had been less frenetic, with more pauses to absorb information, it might have helped.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I gave audiobook as a gift to several people, since I so like the hardcopy. I could return the one I bought for myself, but I can hardly return the gift copies after I've given them! :(
Any additional comments?
Sorry audible, this one is a dud due to the narration and production, not the author.
