The stories gallop along through decades of movies and theater and men— and men. Kate’s spunk and Irish humor, her enormous capability for enjoying life, sparkle as she relates holding on to the values her family taught while relentlessly holding her dream of a career in acting. Bravo for the performance as author as she relays dozens of performances on stage and screen!

The story was good, weaving between centuries, characters linked by ancestry. Nice history if Venice. But! The music was set at a much louder volume than the whispered musings of the characters, largely interior dialogue. When I could barely hear the words, the music would blare on so loud my housemates could hear it from another room. Please correct this. I almost quit listening it was so jarring and interruptive.

Slow pace. Boring repetition about his failed marriage. Basically timid unfolding of story line. Couldn’t connect with characters. Food and landscape descriptions are apt and inviting.

Oh, Richard Osman! What a tedious tale! So many stubby little non-conversations, leading to none of those characters of yours, usually so beautifully and tenderly and lovingly drawn— where are they??
I loved every bit, every minute of the four Thursday Murder Club, listened again to the four lovely tales. I thought in this new series you would have brought out more characters we could recognize and love right along with you— but instead: who intrigues me, spools me into their doings? None of these.

I venture ti say Yet. Because this book seems like a very, very long setup for future books in the series, without hooking us into one or two (or better, four) absorbing, busy personalities. I am so sorry to have waded through this volume, hoping someone would spring to life.

The cleverness of Osman is endless— and continues to make me smile into my surprise as he turns yet another witty corner. He just won’t let a good enough ending be enough, so he extends the endings again and again and finally exhausts the last loose thread, to end on a note of love. Moral suspenseful hilarity. Bravo.
I of course want to rush on to the fourth Thursday Murder Club, but am chagrined to find that Fiona Shaw reads that one too. I cannot bear her breathy whispery voice. It is not a secret, Fiona! In the characters’s voices other than Joyce’s, it is clear that you can speak with actual tone— what is with the hushed, feathery soto voce? Really annoying. I had to have my phone on top volume and close to me. I much preferred Lesley Manville on the first two volumes.

Amelia dumfounds me again—as I chortle at her

Amelia and Emerson and their enormous and motley, talented family weave in and out of mishaps, til the end, clueless. Amelia and Emerson’s usual contest of competing to discover and fit together clues just is not up to snuff, as the events grow more and more alarming and dangerous. Suddenly an old memory pops up, “while doing something else.” But then it is a race to save two of this daring family—and “the treasure.” The whole cast plays the parts perfectly, according to each distinct personality. How Ms Peters mapped all this out through the many complexities of so many books, and still surprises us—masterful—and hilarious.

What an enticing manner in which to learn 20th Century Russian history; use wine and recipes, courtly table manners, the inner workings of a grand international hotel, the evolving relationships that emerge from grace and an always positive outlook! This is a true gentleman, weaving through decades of changing culture, taking us along some surprising turns of events, but we can tune to the foreshadowing, can't we--until Bam! A superlative ending! I 'laughed fir a whole minute with utter delight at how things turned out. I've had the pleasure only a few times to get to the single digit last remaining pages and not know how it would end, (witness The Magus) but never to the very last page! The reader is as masterful as the author. Enjoy!

Stay with Chodren's advice to stay with the uncomfortable upsetting Shenpa that inevitably arises in any life; give it 10 years or so, the medicine of meditation, of staying with being present even though trying to erase the murk with eating or sex or anger might supply temporary relief or at least distraction. This is truly a project worthy of a lifetime; one could die happy. Don't read it; listen to it. As you recognize the laughter on the tape, it will bring you joy of being a human being.
