Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

I had difficulty with the narration
Revisado: 12-29-21
I think this is a good story, but I had difficulty with the narrators. I have hearing difficulties, so it is probably my issue only.

Nothing New Here
Revisado: 09-19-21
I wanted to like this book, but I didn't even finish it. The plot felt old and it just didn't hold my interest. The narration was terrible because of it's pace. It felt as though the woman doing the narration was looking at a time clock and needed to get it finished. Not even the few dramatic parts of the book earned a pause.

Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Struggling with the narration
Revisado: 08-17-21
I have not yet completed the book, and I'm not sure I can. So far I like the story, but I can barely tolerate the narration. Besides the voice, it sounds to me like his normal tone is one of urgency and speaking above a crowd. It's almost frantic. I can't imagine why this narrator was chosen to read this story. It completely ruins it for me.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 05-14-21
Charming, wise, and so touching. This is a book I will read again. I recommend to any who enjoys historical fiction, and the hard truth about our history with our Afro-American neighbors.

Story and performance-both wonderful!
Revisado: 05-06-19
I’m not a book critic, but I loved this story. It Reminded me of Lonesome Dove. I enjoyed the details about the West in the late 19th century and some of the snippets of the “ news of the world”, read by Captain Kidd. but the endearing relationship between the young girl and the Captain brought tears to my eyes. I’m sure that the book is good when it is read, but the performance by Grover Gardner made it come to life. He is one of my favorite readers.

Charming Story - Wonderful Narration
Revisado: 01-17-19
I was looking for something light with a good story and narration. This more than satisfied me. Quirky characters, in the style of Ann Tyler, and excellent narration. I’ll be looking for more from both the author and the narrator.
