The caption and reviews interested me - pretty unimpressed. Single dimension characters, poor science (e.g. why in micro gravity would someone worry about falling from a height). I read a lot of science fiction - the author creates a world which should feel believable and make some sense within the rules of the world. This one misses on most accounts.

The story might have had some promise but it's execution was not very well done - not believable characters, dumb people doing even stupider things, I couldn't bear it and had to return it. After some 14 years and almost 400 books, I have only returned 1 book previously. I will usually listen to books even if I am not crazy about them. And the author narrated this which only made the text fall even flatter. A good narrator can elevate weak material and vice versa. Sadly, this author did not help her cause.

Narrator is terrible, but gets marginally better after the first book. Characters are about as deep as a coat of paint. But all that wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so terminally stupid. Plot points were contrived and had no basis in reality, whether police procedure or human nature although the actual 'mysteries' were acceptable. I listen to a lot of books, more so since the pandemic, and not all that surprising to occasionally see a situation contrived in order to move the plot. Not great storytelling, but acceptable considering the volume I listen to. But over and over again, I found myself groaning, out loud, over the stupidly contrived situation.

Any additional comments?

Sadly, I have to admit that I got hooked on the story and have cursed myself for listening to more of the series. I had thought there were only two. I am in no way suggesting that I only read well written books: to me space operas are a guilty pleasure - like a candy bar. But this is like bad candy. Lots of sugar and barely recognizable flavors.

The characters are extraordinarily thinly written, even the so-called smart ones are not particularly smart and they are all pretty much one-dimensional. The "dialogue" is poor and the narrator in the first two exacerbated the problem. The story is involving, even though there isn't much science, or even pseudo scientific, basis for the world created, although that is easier to forgive than the poor writing. It is like the writer had the characters do dumb things to propel the story because he wasn't skilled enough to move it along in other ways. It is hard to believe this came from a writer with his credits. I have "read" more sophisticated fare from tweens.
