Karma and High School Angst
Revisado: 08-30-24
This story pulls the reader back into their own high school nostalgia, even if their own memories don't match the characters of this story. Most readers will think back and say to themselves "I heard about someone like that".
One slight drawback to the story is that the author felt the need to make the main characters into minor caricatures

At Least We Know Those Frozen Heads Get Used
Revisado: 01-23-23
Listening to how humanity destroys their own planet is unsettling because of its inherent probability. This story reels you in and makes it hard to put down, in part because Bob shows his character in so many ways.
The book tells of the growth of Bob's character by showing his growth in his various selves, as opposed to the lack of growth in his fellow humans. I had not planned to go on past volume one, but now I feel called to do so. Excellent book.

Alt-Time With Humor
Revisado: 12-30-22
A humorous look at a time where JFK was shot, but survived. Dick Nixon finds himself doing wills and estates, then becomes the first Shakey's pizza manager on the moon. How we get from here to there is a humorous trip, with some moments of pure fantasy.
The voice imitations are anywhere between "meh" and "great", and they add power to an uneven script that seems to jump from situation to situation. Since this was recorded as episodic radio, such script issues are to be expected.

Historia
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

Sound not the best for me
Revisado: 12-08-22
The subject matter was very good. The sound levels were occasionally garbled, and sometimes seemed to "go above the red line". Some of the British accents were very heavy, and I had some trouble understanding them. However, that is an issue for me and my auditory challenges. Most likely it would not be a challenge for most people.

Two cousins, Rory and Arden, lie unconscious in a hospital burn unit. The fire, which broke out in their shared college dorm room, killed another student, and the police want answers. Tension between Rory and Arden's parents was already at an all-time high before the fire, owing to a recent financial crisis and the decline of the family business. As the parents huddle anxiously in the waiting room, carefully avoiding the subject of their own unraveling relationships, disturbing truths come to light.

The Narrators Absolutely Saved This Story
Revisado: 09-21-22
The basic premise of this story is solid, although details are lacking in depth, and the listener sometimes has to guess about some things in the past remembrances. The ending also leaves many unanswered questions.
The characters have some depth to them, and are not mere caricatures. They also all have their flaws.
If this book is aimed at a YA audience, I would raise my Story rating to 4 stars, but as an adult book, there are just too many missing details and parts glossed over.
Even with my opinion not being totally 5 star, I still heartily recommend this book as an excellent tale of friendship enduring all challenges.

The medical staff seems friendly enough, but something feels...off. As the days pass, Ethan’s investigation into the disappearance of his colleagues turns up more questions than answers.

Surprise!
Revisado: 08-12-22
This story starts as a typical detective-type mission. Fairly soon, though, the plot lines start becoming tangled, forcing the reader to start questioning what the truth might be. By the end, the real truth is not at all what any reader might guess.
The narrator does a good job of speaking clearly, and does quite well with the various characters. He has a good tone that doesn't put you to sleep.
I went down one on my stars for the story and the overall, mostly because of some points where the story dragged a little, but overall Pines is a story that will keep you guessing.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Still Some Innocence at Hogwarts
Revisado: 03-12-22
We are comparing the books vs the movies. This time through, the details were more obvious. The movie, though, cut out much of what this book was about; Harry's first year at Hogwarts, and getting a baptism by fire into the world of magic.
Jim Dale, the narrator, is a gem with the various voices, and tries his best to keep up the pacing. The story does tend to drag a little, but he's pulling as hard as he can to get things moving. Even after all these years, though, the story line is still fresh.

Historia
From "the master of alternate history" comes a new trilogy that reimagines a mid-20th century in which General MacArthur, without bothering to consult President Truman, detonates nuclear warheads in several Manchurian cities after China enters the Korean War. In his acclaimed novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove has scrutinized the twisted soul of the 20th century, from the forces that set World War I in motion to the rise of fascism in the decades that followed.

Is Turtledove Better on Audible or on the Page?
Revisado: 08-18-21
I found this particular construct, using nuclear weapons during the Korean War, to be mostly a song of one note sung many times. However, this is also the first Turtledove series I have listened to on Audible rather than reading the books.
It's interesting that the book teaser mentions General MacArthur as being the loose cannon, but in the book, it is President Truman who actually makes all the decisions. I wish that there had been more political action between countries and alliances, and possibly military action in other theaters. Maybe to talk about rumors creating panics and people leaving possible target cities.
The narrator is decent, and obviously does the heavily male-laden cast well. The females and kids? I'll just say he didn't sound silly. of course I will finish the series; after all, it's Harry Turtledove. However, I don't think it's his best work, so 4 stars is being generous.

Before Bonnie and Clyde there were Tiger Girl and the Candy Kid. In the wake of world war, a pandemic, and an economic depression, Margaret and Richard Whittemore, two love-struck working-class kids from Baltimore, reached for the dream of a better life. The couple headed up a gang that in less than a year stole over one million dollars’ worth of diamonds and precious gems - over 10 million dollars today.

Amazing Research añd Interesting Subject
Revisado: 07-14-21
Glenn has done a fantastic job of researching a time of which many people have very little knowledge. Bonnie and Clyde must have had a better PR agent, but Glenn's treatise on the Whittemore gang and its members does a great job in evening the score.
The narrator, Christina Delaine, does a decent job of representing the era rather well, but her general delivery was somewhat monotonish.
The story was a masterpiece of writing, but so indicative of Glenn's writing style and ability. This book is an excellent read, and it kept my attention throughout.
