Scariest aliens ever!
Revisado: 08-19-24
If you want scary aliens, the Charaxx(sp?} are as scary as they get. Gods. Mysterious, implacable, merciless.
I immediately began to care about the humans at the center of the story. That's what keeps me going with something like this. Scary aliens are not enough. I have to care about the people.
I can’t wait for volume II but I guess I will have to. I want to know what becomes of my new friends.

What a gem this is!
Revisado: 09-29-23
At first I thought, how can I take this seriously? Every half-aware and educated person who lived through 2020 knows that a virus as deadly as the one depicted in this novel would have burned itself out straight away. Yet Ms. Mandel, aided by compelling narration, brings the characters and situations to life with such skill that I had no choice but to suspend disbelief. Soon I found myself listening at every opportunity.

Then a week or two later, again. There is so much here. It's like an onion.
You should listen to The Passenger first though. But maybe I'm only saying that because I did.

Alastair Reynolds does it again!
Revisado: 11-14-22
I really liked this one. Compelling concept, not revealed until near the end. Kept me going. Mr. Reynolds could use a new editor though. I mean, "self-educate myself." Seriously? There were other howlers, but that one I jotted down.
But don't let that deter you. It's a great story and well told.

Historia
As this urgent, genre-defying book opens, a woman who has recently been elevated to prominence for her social media posts travels around the world to meet her adoring fans. She is overwhelmed by navigating the new language and etiquette of what she terms "the portal," where she grapples with an unshakable conviction that a vast chorus of voices is now dictating her thoughts. When existential threats--from climate change and economic precariousness to the rise of an unnamed dictator and an epidemic of loneliness--begin to loom, she posts her way deeper into the portal's void.

Historia
Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.

This is so funny!
Revisado: 09-20-22
Unless you are put off by violence, this send-up of the whole self-help industrial complex is so funny! I completed it like three monster gulps. It's not too long, it's free, and it's meta even, containing as it does a sort of cameo appearance by Audible Originals. What are you wait for?
Trigger warning though: violent deaths occur.

Historia
Humanity is struggling to hold out against a hostile takeover by an alien race that claims to be on a religious mission to bring all sentient life to its God at the End of Time. PF Hamilton does it again. It gets a little confusing near the end but he's juggling all these weird timelines resulting from relativistic space travel. Most SF authors don't even try.

Historia
The world is increasingly unthinkable, a world of planetary disasters, emerging pandemics, and the looming threat of extinction. In this book, Eugene Thacker suggests that we look to the genre of horror as offering a way of thinking about the unthinkable world. To confront this idea is to confront the limit of our ability to understand the world in which we live - a central motif of the horror genre. In the Dust of This Planet explores these relationships between philosophy and horror.
