Historia
Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him. Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere. But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.

This was an entertaining book to listen to while doing laundry and housework. I have no complaints about this book but I don't think it will be very memorable.

Fun collection of folksy / horror tales.
Revisado: 02-23-22
I enjoyed this collection of Manly Wade Wellman's stories. Narrator Brian Troxell did a nice job of voicing the characters. I would recommend this collection if you like Wellman's stories or if you think it looks interesting.
If it appeals to you when browsing, you will more than likely enjoy it too.

Historia
Sometimes the worst storms aren't from Mother Nature, and sometimes the worst nightmares aren't the ones in our heads. Mike Mitchell, an average New Yorker already struggling to keep his family together, suddenly finds himself fighting just to keep them alive when an increasingly bizarre string of disasters starts appearing on the world's news networks. As both the real world and the cyber world come crashing down, bending perception and reality, a monster snowstorm cuts New York off from the world, turning it into a wintry tomb where nothing is what it seems.

A good book, until the last 2 appalling chapters.
Revisado: 02-21-22
I have read a couple of other titles by this author, which I enjoyed well enough so when I saw that this title was free, I was excited to dive in. The excitement for this book continued...until the last 2 chapters. Let me first say, narrator Tom Taylorson was at the top of his narration game on this book. There were many different characters to voice, with multiple accents and with very few exceptions, he nailed every minute of this book.
About the book itself... Never in my life, in the many many books that I have read or listened to, have I ever been more appalled and disappointed by an ending.
This book had the potential to be the beginning of a great apocalyptic fiction series. It could have been a great standalone as well if the author chose.
The thing that was so upsetting to me was that the ending was almost a slap in the face, an insult to apocalyptic fiction everywhere. The last 2 chapters were such a gross example of that pretty little bow to tie it all up, with the most outrageously incomprehensible set of factors just happening at once to create a... a what..... I don't even know... a big old misunderstanding?
*****possible spoilers from this point on*****
Misunderstandings that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, cannibalism of friends and neighbors, blood drinking to prevent slow and agonizing starvation, NYC's entire infrastructure entirely collapsing and the rest of the country / world not realizing what was happening? That the rest of the world "thought NY was asleep under their snowy blanket"? The insults continue when the main character realized he was "wrong" because his preconceived notions combined with the horrific state of his world made him think things were much worse than they really were? I am positive that the big old cluster F that his world became was horrific enough. The author actually had the balls to write the main character wondering about the crazy set of coincidences that just happened all at once to make this big disaster possible.
I feel as though the author just sort of gave up at the end. Maybe he thought he should switch it up or he was going for some big feel good story instead of writing the regular end of the world story. The thing is, he is good at writing the end of the world stories. Maybe he wanted to give us a deep commentary on the evils of our prejudices and the wrongs of society when in the end, he really just contradicted any discussion in the meat of the book regarding the evils that led to "the event" by wrapping it up with sunshine and rainbows and nothing at all being learned from what happened. Nothing changes, the world keeps turning and they walk off into the sunset holding hands and smiling.
The reason why most of us that read the end of the world / SHTF type books is because we want a REAL SHTF book! This sadly, was not one of those.

Historia
As a neuroscientist, Marjorie Woollacott had no doubts that the brain was a purely physical entity controlled by chemicals and electrical pulses. When she experimented with meditation for the first time, however, her entire world changed. Woollacott's journey through years of meditation has made her question the reality she built her career upon and has forced her to ask what human consciousness really is.

I never like to give poor reviews but...
Revisado: 01-19-22
I really do not like to give poor reviews to books. Writing a book, especially one that involves a lot of research and years or even decades of life experience as with th this book, is a huge undertaking and I applaud anyone that takes that on. For all that is involved in the research and writing process, I do not like to review negatively. I also very rarely fail to stick it out in finishing an audio book. This however was just unbearable for me.
I was very interested in the subject matter so I really tried to put my aggravation aside. I was unable to get past the narrator, who also happens to be the author. Her voice, her tone were grating to the nerves and the way she delivers information made me feel as though she was speaking to a small child.
I really tried, thinking that there would be content to make it worth the painful narrator but no greatness was revealed and the narrator was making me angry towards the world around me and my own eardrums. I had to throw in the towel after just around the 1 hour mark.

Left me wanting more!
Revisado: 01-03-22
Great short story, I only wish that it were a full novel. While the story left me wanting more, it was not done in a way that felt incomplete.
Great narration as well. I'm off to find more of Hugh Howey's work and I would definitely enjoy other stories performed by Gabra Zackman.

With Hurricane Madison barreling toward Aberdeen, Georgia, the Hurst family scrambles to prepare their home for the coming gale. But as the eye of the storm approaches, Cooper Hurst becomes all too aware that their household will have to endure far more than wind and rain. Creepy and atmospheric, JC Hemphill's Erasure is a dark thrill from start to finish.

Great short story!
Revisado: 11-17-21
This short story was suspenseful and interesting from the start. I enjoy a story that keeps me guessing about what might happen next and this story fit the bill.
I would reccomend this story to anyone that enjoys a good suspenseful and creepy story, particularly middle school aged kiddos. My 2 middle schoolers and I enjoyed it equally.
The only thing that I'd change would be to make it into a full length novel. There are many story elements that could have been explored more, yet not to the detriment of the story. As this story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that allows the reader's mind to imagine the possibilities, I am hopeful that the author might share what he thinks will come next.

Painful to endure. It is just plain not good.
Revisado: 11-17-21
I am almost positive that the author found my 6th grade best friend's first attempt at erotica in a box somewhere and published it as this short story. It truly reads as though written by a freshly blossomed pubescent.
This story is overflowing with every possible phrase that you might utter when mocking one of those ripped bodice paperbacks. Only in this story, the phrases are not being used in jest. They are for real attempting to set up a steamy love scene. This was so cringe worthy and so predictable, despite the plot theme involving demons and the attempt at being twisty.
I could not finish this audiobook. I very rarely fail to finish listening, even if it is while driving to work or doing things around the house or just letting a book play to provide some noise.
I think that this story is a one off for the author because his other work is nothing close to this... very not good story.

All around not very good.
Revisado: 04-12-21
I don’t like to leave negative reviews because sometimes a book just isn’t for me, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. In this case though, it’s just not a very good set of books. The storylines are flimsy, areas of the plot that should be addressed are missing entirely while the author spends much too long on unnecessary explanations and conversations.
I do like the fact that the author dedicated the series to the men and women in blue and I respect the fact that she is a veteran and still works with veteran’s causes. With those facts, it is even more confusing to me that parts of the story pertaining to these areas are are so underdeveloped.
Also, for a book that has so much to do with survivalism, there are many things lacking in knowledge on the subject. For example, in the first book, it is mentioned that the survivors had not tasted salt since before the event occurred. Salt is an absolute staple product for so called “preppers” or survivalists. Many other examples can be found throughout the text.
The narrator bothered me somewhat, I’m sure that the many different voices are difficult to make up and keep track of but they were done in a strange way. There were also quite a few mispronounced or strangely pronounced words that took me out of the story.
This series was free, so I did finish it. It certainly was not bad enough to quit before it ended but I would have liked to read a review to let me know some of these opinions before I started listening.
