Historia
Combining the expertise of a biblical scholar and a missionary practitioner, Misreading Scripture with Individualist Eyes is an essential guidebook to the cultural background of the Bible and how it should inform our reading. E. Randolph Richards and Richard James explore deep social structures of the ancient Mediterranean - kinship, patronage, and brokerage-along with their key social tools-honor, shame, and boundaries - that the biblical authors lived in and lie below the surface of each text.

Excellent Insights

I just finished this book and I love what it has to say. I found the chapter on the role of Shame in collectivist societies and the section on our role as Brokers, not Patrons, particularly enlightening.

Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Fantastic
Revisado: 09-10-22
This is a profoundly thought-provoking book. I found myself especially interested in chapter 5. I can’t say I 100% agree with all the authors’ conclusions, but the good thing about a book encouraging you to think critically about your cultural biases is that you don’t need to share their conclusions to benefit from their processes.
Seriously, this gets a big-time recommendation from me.

Confusing Chronology, but Superb Story
Revisado: 08-27-22
The second book in the Alvin Maker story takes quite a while to connect to the first one, and when it does, I’m not entirely convinced the timeline matches 100% to that established in the first book. This is momentarily disorienting. The story is excellent and strange, and I’m increasingly a fan of this bizarre alternate history of America. And it’s possible I’m just wrong about how the order of events lines up, or that—trying to create an American Epic Mythology—card was willing to allow some contradictions, as often appear in classic mythologies.
Honestly, my least favorite part about this series so far is the seemingly random changes to history that took place prior to the story’s beginning that have no apparent root in the differences. They SEEM like changes for changes’ sake, or possibly to ram more historical personages into the narrative, rather than following the necessary logic of the world.
For all that, I recommend that you go and read Seventh Son first, then come read this one.

Who would suspect that the same mind that created the most famous literary detective of all time also took on the eternally popular genre of vampires? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a contemporary of Bram Stoker, gave us some fascinating works of vampire fiction. From the bloodsucking plant in "The American's Tale" to the bloodsucking wife in "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire," he reveled in the horror created by creatures who survived on the blood of men and women.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 08-25-22
Sadly, none of this book succeeded at providing the promised amusement. The last story, a Holmes story not written by Doyle, was outright insulting, while the early stories had dialog that felt stilted and unnatural, far from what I’ve come to expect from the illustrious author. To top it all off, I found most of the stories to be boring and unfulfilling.
Maybe it’s me. Maybe I lack adequate grey matter to appreciate the nuance in these stories and what I view as stilted language is appropriate to the setting and time. But if you are like me, I’d give this one a pass.

Short as it was, this story quickly caught my interest and I love how it turned out. It’s possible that knowing more pathfinder lore would make it easier to enjoy, but I didn’t feel like I needed it to appreciate this story.

Better than just Good
Revisado: 08-19-22
I’ve heard nothing negative about this book or it’s series. I’ve heard lots of compliments/praise. But I took forever to get around to it because I never wanted the particular emotional/moral beat everyone implied it would hit.
But it was so much better than I expected. This isn’t bad guys reveling in being bad. This is a story of a group of admittedly morally-tainted mercenaries told from the perspective of a (relatively) good man who sees the good in them. If someone had told me it was like this, I would’ve read it years ago.

This book was educational and interesting. It was strange to me to read about computers being developed in my own life time. Particularly computers I remember my dad coming home with when I was young.
A quick read, but good. Worth your time.

I found this book a pleasant surprise. While I expected a view of dog-eat-dog survival, this book is actually framed as a collection of simple practical techniques for self-betterment, especially as it relates to the social arena.

This understanding is much more effective than you think. Stay away unless you really intend to master the art of persuasion and mind control! You probably know such people. Those who get everything they want. The lady who can snare a rich lover with a smile and a few words. The short, hairless individual who is constantly surrounded by attractive women. The person who gets an annual promotion. The individual who is far less enlightened than you, but earns twice as much.

This book has almost no advice about reading body language for the purpose of knowing if you’re being manipulated. Rather, it is a modestly practical guide to Dark Psychology, manipulation, and NLP, with a reasonable chunk dedicated to reading body language. However, none of the cues discussed in the body language chapter were direct signs of manipulation.
