Historia
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

Loved Every Moment
Revisado: 04-28-25
The characters in this book had me from the beginning. Vera is a delight, I wish I knew a Vera, and everyone else was written perfectly. At the end, I got teary-eyed, which is the sign of a good book for me. Also, the narration was flawless. A perfect narrator for this book. I hope she does all of the future Vera books.

Historia
In this astonishing debut, the venerable but gossipy New York literary scene is twisted into a claustrophobic fun house of paranoia, horror, and wickedly dark humor. George March’s latest novel is a smash. No one is prouder than Mrs. March, his doting wife. But one morning, the shopkeeper of her favorite patisserie suggests that his protagonist is based on Mrs. March herself. Clutching her ostrich-leather pocketbook, she flees, that one casual remark destroying her belief that she knew everything about her husband - as well as herself.

Should have been a short story
Revisado: 03-24-25
This book is an excellent character sketch, but it gets tedious as hour after hour the book stagnates in the same place. I, unlike some of the reviewers, loved the ending. It felt like the only possible ending. But, it could have and should have come much, much sooner. While I’m glad I listened to it, I also didn’t enjoy listening for at least three hours of it and I ended up skipping two chapters in the middle because I just couldn’t take the tedium anymore. The reader was excellent, the writing was beautiful, but this would have succeeded more as a short story or a novella.
The author’s second book, Victorian Psycho, is much better paced. I read that book before this one and I’m glad I did, because I know not to give up on her.

Historia
200 years in the future, environmental catastrophe has befallen the Earth, leaving the skies and weather systems transformed into a nightmarish maelstrom of rainbow chemicals, and the city of London wiped off the map (opinion remains divided on whether or not this was the best outcome for the country).

Historia
Candace Chen, a millennial drone self-sequestered in a Manhattan office tower, is devoted to routine. With the recent passing of her Chinese immigrant parents, she’s had her fill of uncertainty. She’s content just to carry on: She goes to work, troubleshoots the teen-targeted Gemstone Bible, watches movies in a Greenpoint basement with her boyfriend. So Candace barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps New York.

I couldn’t handle the narration and the flashbacks
Revisado: 02-18-25
I almost never give books a poor ranking but the narration on this one made listening almost unbearable. In addition the book has flashbacks that go back years and years, instead of moving the story forward, which is a writing style I’m not fond of. I liked the ending, but most of the book and all of the narration was very slow and plodding.

Historia
Noah Fairchild has been losing his formerly polite Southern parents to far-right cable news for years, so when his mother leaves him a voicemail warning him that the “Great Reckoning” is here, he assumes it’s related to one of the many conspiracy theories she believes in. But when his own phone calls go unanswered, Noah makes the long drive from Brooklyn to Richmond, Virginia. There, he discovers his childhood home in shambles, a fridge full of spoiled food, and his parents locked in a terrifying trance-like state in front of the TV.

Great book. There is so much going on, from commentary on social media use to politics to religion. It’s an absolutely wild time. I loved it.

Historia
Since the late 1980's, The Square had been one of the most important clubs in New York for the alt-comedy scene. But before that it was something much darker and is now a place where evil lingers, waiting for a chance to spill blood. After a night of killing on stage, four comics find themselves in a desperate situation as the spirits of the past come out to play, and a fight for laughs becomes a fight for survival in the most unlikely of places.

The weirdest zombie novel I’ve ever read
Revisado: 11-09-24
I love zombie novels. I read them all of the time. So I am confident when I say this is the weirdest zombie story I’ve ever read. The author has an overly poetic style, which I enjoyed, but it’s incredibly abstract and overly descriptive. The story itself is almost completely unlike the movie. I honestly can’t tell if the whole book was supposed to be someone’s hallucination. It’s that unhinged. If you are expecting something like the movie, don’t read this. If you are ok with a completely abstract, disconnected, and unhinged story with an inexplicable ending, then go ahead and give it a listen.

Historia
Nobody has a “normal” family, but Vesper Wright’s is truly...something else. Vesper left home at eighteen and never looked back—mostly because she was told that leaving the staunchly religious community she grew up in meant she couldn’t return. But then an envelope arrives on her doorstep.

A classic cult story with a twist
Revisado: 11-04-24
I don’t want to give any spoilers, so I’ll just say that this story was well-written with the perfect narrator and an interesting story. I enjoyed it. Lots of classic horror elements in there with an interesting twist and great character growth.

Disjointed and weird but kind of fun
Revisado: 10-24-24
The story was very disjointed, but it’s an interesting premise and the writing was fun to read. Came across as having a moral to the story, which is not my favorite thing.
