Unfortunate Narrator
Revisado: 05-06-25
The story may have been interesting, but the narrator is awful. I feel like I’m in kindergarten being read to during storytime. It’s absolutely maddening. I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it through…

Historia
Long overshadowed by Jane Eyre, Villette is widely admired as one of Charlotte Bronte's finest works. This story of a young teacher at a girl's school in the city of Villette is a particular challenge for the young reader, for it requires maturity of vision, a fine narrative sense - and a command of French! Mandy Weston, a newcomer to Naxos AudioBooks, tells the story magnificently.

Captivating
Revisado: 12-18-24
I’m so glad I stuck with it to the end, and what an end it was!!! The story is exquisitely crafted, and the narrator superlative. The level of vocabulary is remarkable and I enjoyed stopping along the way to find the meanings in my dictionary. My only trouble lay in the somewhat frequent dialogue in French, which I really don’t understand. But what I missed was not critical.

Historia
Travelling in Europe with her family, Daisy Miller, an exquisitely beautiful young American woman, presents her fellow countryman Winterbourne with a dilemma he cannot resolve. Is she deliberately flouting social convention in the outspoken way she talks and acts, or is she simply ignorant of those conventions? When she strikes up an intimate friendship with an urbane young Italian, her flat refusal to observe the codes of respectable behaviour leave her perilously exposed.

Historia
From the 1920s to 1950, Georgia Tann ran a black-market baby business at the Tennessee Children’s Home Society in Memphis. The publication of Lisa Wingate’s novel Before We Were Yours brought new awareness of Tann’s lucrative career in child trafficking. Adoptees who knew little about their pasts gained insight into the startling facts behind their family histories. Encouraged by their contact with Wingate and award-winning journalist Judy Christie, who documented the stories of 15 adoptees in this book, many determined Tann survivors set out to trace their roots.

Not getting anywhere
Revisado: 11-14-24
It just seems to be plodding along with no depth and nothing tying it all together, except the stories happen to be from the Tennessee children’s home. I’m very disappointed because the book by Lisa Wingate, Before We Were Yours, is extraordinary!

Historia
Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

The narrator’s performance is astounding!
Revisado: 08-16-24
The author goes into so much information about so many characters and eras and scenes that by 37 hours into the story I can’t take it anymore. I have forgotten where the main character, Jean Valjean even is! And Cosette!! I’m absolutely buried in detail that has obscured the magnificent storyline. I am seriously considering stopping it altogether.

Historia
Considered the first full-length detective novel in the English language, T.S. Eliot described The Moonstone as 'the first and greatest English detective novel'. The stone of the title is an enormous yellow diamond plundered from an Indian shrine after the Siege of Seringapatam. Given to Miss Verinder on her 18th birthday, it mysteriously disappears that very night. Suspicion falls on three Indian jugglers who have been seen in the neighbourhood. Sergeant Cuff is assigned to the case....

Enthralling narrator!

There definitely are parts of the story that are humorous and intriguing and delightful. However, there were too many parts that were laden down with too much dialogue and became difficult to follow. I lost interest in the story by the time it was over.

Historia
The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Revisado: 09-14-22
After listening to Bill Homewood read the Count of Monte Cristo, I am crestfallen at her reading. All she does is read. There’s no interpretation. There are no alternate voices. I am sorely disappointed and having a hard time getting through this story. May give up only because of her reading of it.

Beyond words…
Revisado: 08-22-22
This is the first time I have ever read/heard this classic novel; it was extraordinary! The complexity, intrigue and profundity this story displays is exceptional, as is Bill Homewoods performance of it. The perfection of his voices assumed for each character, and his facility with both French and Italian language is truly more than I have words for. Though it is a very long story indeed, it is thoroughly captivating and I am so disappointed that it is over! I cannot recommend this strongly enough.
