Rich detailed world and extrapolation of what life was like in the Shakespeare home.

The reader is or was directed to be this … dull, etherial, voice with little variation as if recounting a dream. Could only endure short stints of listening and an AWFUL choice for a long car ride.

So much vocal fry, so much low-volume, low pitch, delivery, and the accents are… I don’t even know what those are. And she obviously has vocal problems… Maybe nodes?, It all just makes this really difficult to listen to and, ultimately, enjoy. Should not have pre-ordered. Should’ve listened to a sample first. I’ve never wanted a refund before but this time I do.

I am a Star Trek fan. I have read plenty of the books in my life. This well performed mess is so hard to follow I quit four or five times. The edit seems to have been built upon the notion that only true fans would listen and fill in the blanks with their extensive knowledge. Mr Shatner has not helped matters by cramming in elements from nearly the entire trek canon as if they were drawn from a grab bag and then trying to tie them all together. I suspect the written copy allows a little more air into the narrative so that it is not so tightly wound but I will not seek it out to see. As it stands, this version is the literary equivalent of a 15 year old boy's drawing of a woman with 20 breasts... An abundance of crammed together details that fans obsess about but too many to know how to really handle them.

I'd originally read this story 30 years ago in paperback. I was looking forward to enjoying that story again however the engineering / balance of sound effects and music versus voice makes doing so almost impossible. The voices were overpowered especially when George Takei dropped into his lower register where he can hardly be heard. Granted I was listening to this on a road trip but I should've been able to do that.
