I liked that it had a clever hook, interesting characters, and suspicion was spread liberally. I appreciated that it doesn't fall into the trap of being a love story cozy. The story pace is good but it really does need to listened to a a higher speed to avoid sounding dreary.

Historia
Timid Renata Molloy is in mortal peril after overhearing details of a breathtaking conspiracy. But her courageous and near-identical cousin Jane Smith—homeless and just two-and-elevenpence away from the workhouse—is willing to take her place if it means a roof over her head and plenty to eat. So Jane, with the help of Captain Henry March of Scotland Yard, whose hand in marriage she once refused, finds herself incognito at stately Luttrell Marches, enmeshed in a mystery of secret formulae, political plots, and a maze of secret doors and secret passages …

Old fashioned adventure
Revisado: 12-29-23
This is reminiscent of The Secret Adversary, Agatha Christie's 1922 introduction to Tommy & Tuppence, (which I love) and is very typical of stories written for independent young women of the day. No insipid heroine, this girl is smart and resourceful and is not dependent upon a man to rescue her as she keeps up an impersonation of her cousin in a house full of anarchists, explores hidden passages, and discovers secret agendas, including an antigovernmental plot. It is well written and everything this genre was meant to be. The readers voice is pleasant with good characterization, though I didn't agree with the pronunciation of some of the words which was bit distracting .

Historia
When a renowned theater director senses something amiss during his latest production, he calls Nero Wolfe. Though the corpulent genius wouldn’t normally accept a job this vague, a mutual friend dangles the prospect of a very rare orchid in exchange for his services, and Wolfe can’t resist. With a mind to suss out useful backstage gossip, Wolfe turns to his faithful assistant, Archie Goodwin, to impersonate a journalist in order to speak to the cast. Though Goodwin’s conversations prove unfruitful, on his last day at the theater, the director is murdered in his sound-proof booth.

I was very much enjoying the presentation when, in Chapter 9, it totally quit playing. Nothing I did got it to continue past the same place: 1:27.

Getting better
Revisado: 03-07-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was a long way from a magical media experience, but I wouldn't say it was ill-spent. It passed away the hours of a long drive it, and it kept my attention. It was good to hear about the Navaho Police again, and it's going to take some time for Anne Hillerman to make the series her own.
If you’ve listened to books by Anne Hillerman before, how does this one compare?
Much better than the last one, and I expect them to get better as she goes along and gets more comfortable with her legacy. It feels like she's developing new characters of her own, which should be easier for her to write about.
What aspect of Christina Delaine’s performance would you have changed?
First of all, slow down the tempo a little bit. Second of all, keep a more even tone; I frequently found myself wishing I could "rewind the tape" and listen to the past few minutes again so I could understand what she said. She does a good job with the women's dialogue, but her men's dialogue seems to be very stilted.
Could you see Rock with Wings being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Can't see this book as a movie, as the plot winds around too much. I could see the Leaphorn/ Chee/ Manuelito franchise going to a TV series, and failing miserably in the ratings. I think too much of the cultural background would be lost in the process.
