Historia
In this satirical faux autobiography, Moll Flanders, abandoned at birth, sets her rebellious heart on a life of independence in late 17th-century England. A strong-willed woman, she is determined to make a better life for herself, no matter what it takes: thievery, prostitution, seductions, marriages, or illicit liaisons. Born to a convicted felon in Newgate prison Moll learns to live off her wits, refusing to be a helpless victim and defying most traditional depictions of women of the era.

Janet Suzman is a gem!
Revisado: 03-25-22
Fantastic narrator! The story is sometimes exciting, often repetitive. Not a sexy book (I'd assumed it was) but the sense of an unreliable narrator (lying to us, lying to herself?) is the real drama.

Welcome to Bailey's Café, the most mythically real diner you've ever walked into. Presided over by Bailey and his helpmate, Nadine, it is a magnet that draws a wide variety of the "colored" people of 1948, each with a story to tell.

my favorite audiobook yet!
Revisado: 05-29-17
do not miss this one. I already loved gloria Naylor from reading mama day, so I figured this would be good. it was even better than I'd hoped. lots of sad in it, but it has a bigger story to tell than sorrow. Naylor was the real deal. she was a genius & will be missed. great cast of narrators. my favorite ensemble audiobook, and I've enjoyed others.

A man is making a crude leather mask with slits for eyes and mouth, and an iron spike fixed in the middle of the forehead. It is a 'death mask', once used by Icelandic farmers to slaughter calves. He has revenge in mind. Meanwhile, with Detective Erlendur absent, his baseball-loving colleague Sigurdur Óli is in the spotlight. A school reunion has left Sigurdur Óli dissatisfied with life in the police force. Iceland is enjoying an economic boom and young tycoons are busy partying with the international jet set.

a sad one
Revisado: 05-15-17
I knew indridason would find a way to make me feel for sigurdur oli. I was so glad when I realized that we would get to learn more about andres, though of all the sad stories in this series so far, his has been the saddest. It was hard to spend time with him, even as a reader, with the option to press pause. his story stays with you. I love the respect indridason gives to each character. there are no disposable people in this world, and it is always a joy to read an author who is aware of that.

hope indridason has written or will write another one from her perspective. not sure I'd want to see the world through sigurdur oli's eyes (so judgmental), but I'm willing to go there if indridason is. he's fantastic.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

great story. great narrator
Revisado: 04-15-17
I listened to the whole thing in about 3 days and loved it. Roth is a great author and this story is so good. nothing truly implausible in it, which is what makes the book so upsetting. the masked, unpredictable nature of American anti semitism is captured well, as well as intra-group friction & class resentment.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

great narrator, great story, but. ..
Revisado: 10-22-16
Jane is a drama queen but makes great asides, St. John a grade A god-botherer, Rochester plucked straight out of female id (so naturally he's the best part of the story), Adele a hilarious caricature of the british take on whats wrong with the french (short answer: frivolity). Helen Burns is second only to Rochester, may even be better. Thandie Newton is fantastic, all her voices convincing. would love to hear her read more!
my only complaints are with the story itself. but our world would be unrecognizable to the brontes, our values grotesque. JUST GET A DIVORCE, YOU'RE NOT EVEN CATHOLIC, ISN'T THAT THE WHOLE REASON BRITAIN STOPPED BEING CATHOLIC. but I guess it wouldn't be much of a story then. Janes self imposed poverty disgusted me (it's not poverty if it's optional, boo), st. John, were he real, would have been one of the worst things England ever did to india, and for someone who was trying to pay for a loaf of bread with her worn out gloves just a few weeks ago, Jane is pretty haughty re: her rural students. I guess you can't escape the prejudices of your time & place, or at least not easily. final verdict: thandie rules, Rochester is a dreamboat for the ages, Jane's judgmental but full of great "bless her heart" Christian snaps on those she's too well bred to describe bluntly.
