Really Creative
Revisado: 10-11-24
I listened for a few months with my 11 year old son on our way to school each morning. Soo many opportunities for in-depth conversation. In my situation, I really had to become zen with the amount of profanity, but the book wasn’t dirty. I loved the trajectory of technology envisioned by the author as being developed by the inhabitants of the terraformed planet. I also love the incorporation of long periods of time and how this plays out for the different groups of characters. There’s so much there.

Some of the most important info
Revisado: 05-22-23
I really wish the author would have narrated this audiobook. All the same, it is very listenable. I believe that inside of this book is some of the best analysis of where we are in the human story that has ever been written. This is a gigantic look at the interplay between three enormous systems that are at the bottom of everything our social order depends on— the economy, ecosystem, and energy. If you like books that give you a sense of where we’ve been as a species, and where we are going at the widest scale possible, this book is for you. If aliens arrive and ask where we are in our story, the crash course is one of a few books I hand to them.

Worth it for my fam
Revisado: 08-14-21
I have a 7 and 9 year old and I want something to listen to with them that I can enjoy as well. I am a science lover and want to have as many influences as possible nudge my kids in that direction. It takes good storytelling like this to help that interest-building along. Also, I want to start getting into more thrilling storytelling without the story going overboard into full adult language and action. This does it well. I love the attention given to time as a major story element, and the playing with the timeline was explosive in their brain. It was well explained and very followable for listeners who might be encountering those concepts for the first time. Fun for all ages regardless.
