Phenomenal writing with plenty of feel-good moments and an outstanding performance from Kate Reading. Can't wait for the next installment.

much better than the first
Revisado: 06-07-24
The author did a much better job of portraying the hero without going over the top. there was still plenty of " I'm a badass " but not near as much as the first and also plenty of humor to help take the edge of. Looking forward to the third.

Historia
Betrayed by those she trusts most and her magic ripped from her, all Sal the Cacophony has left is her name, her story, and the weapon she used to carve both. But she has a will stronger than magic and knows exactly where to go. The Scar, a land torn between powerful empires, where rogue mages go to disappear, disgraced soldiers go to die and Sal went with a blade, a gun, and a list of seven names.

This was a hard one to get through. The narrator kept me going when I wanted to just give it up. Then first 10 or so hours reads like that one guy at the bar that just rambles on about how great he is at everything. It never actually goes away, but eventually there was enough groundwork laid out to interest me in the plot and backstory.
I'll listen to the other two since I bought the trilogy all at one time, but I'm not craving it like some other series.

Historia
The Dynize have unlocked the Landfall Godstone, and Michel Bravis is tasked with returning to Greenfire Depths to do whatever he can to prevent them from using its power: from sewing dissension among the enemy ranks to rallying the Palo population. Ben Styke's invasion of Dynize is curtailed when a storm scatters his fleet. Coming ashore with just 20 lancers, he is forced to rely on brains rather than brawn - gaining new allies in a strange land on the cusp of its own internal violence.

different narrator

Honestly minor complaint but when you binge a series and the final book has a different narrator and none of the characters have the same voices it really disconnects you from the experience. That said it was still a good performance

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Hard to finish
Revisado: 02-09-18
The story wasn't awful but it felt like it moved just a little too fast. Honestly the part I hated most about this book was the main character's inner monologue. Far too often I found myself thinking this could be found on Reddit under the r/iamverybadass subreddit. I'm all for intelligent characters and quick thinking but Jaz knows too much about too many things and the only weakness she had in any scenario was easily overcome by the fact that they were on the moon.
The production could have been better. At one point in the early part of the book there was a loud noise like something fell over in the studio Also the performance didn't bring me all the way into the story, it just left me listening to someone doing bad imitations of various accents that weren't really even that consistent.
Overall I give it 3 out of 5 since the last three chapters managed to get my full attention and hold on to it. Solid ending, I just wish it had better build up.

STOP WITH THE HORNS
Revisado: 05-05-17
After the first book I managed to get over Kate's inflection while she narrates but the random placement of horns in the middle of a chapter is ridiculous. They take me out of the story completely and from what I can tell they don't actually indicate anything significant.
Otherwise this is a great series with an engaging plot and characters that I actually care about. I plan to finish the series but the horns...just...UGH!!
