Historia
In twelve luminous stories set across three centuries, The History of Sound examines the unexpected ways the past returns to us and how love and loss are entwined and transformed over generations. In Ben Shattuck's ingenious collection, each story has a companion story, which contains a revelation about the previous, paired story. Mysteries and murders are revealed, history is refracted, and deep emotional connections are woven through characters and families.

I loved the fun of finding characters woven through the stories. Beautifully written and read by these narrators.

Historia
Returning to the city that inspired his first prize-winning book, Lost in the City, Jones has filled this new collection with people who call Washington, D.C., home. Yet it is not the city's power brokers that most concern him but rather its ordinary citizens.

I liked this book. Some characters were more compelling than others. Aunt Hagars Children was more tightly woven.

Historia
Henry Townsend, a black farmer, bootmaker, and former slave, has a fondness for Paradise Lost and an unusual mentor, William Robbins, perhaps the most powerful white man in antebellum Virginia's Manchester County. Under Robbins's tutelage, Henry becomes proprietor of his own plantation, as well as of his own slaves. When he dies, his widow Caldonia succumbs to profound grief, and things begin to fall apart.

I liked the interconnectivity of the characters.
Revisado: 11-27-24
The social and interpersonal complexities drew me in as I tried to understand each character. Their choices or lack thereof were sometimes painful and sometimes painted the many shades of gray that exist throughout history.
