Great second book

The narrator does a spectacular job bringing Whitney's story to life. The home series is the perfect mix of hallmark, spice, and HEA.

Must read indigenous thriller
Revisado: 11-15-24
I love a good thriller
I love indigenous literature
This book speaks on an incredibly important issue that is tearing indigenous communities apart.
And this story is far more than a hard thriller about tragedy or trauma. It brings community, culture and genuine joy into a world that fights through hard things as matter of course.
More people need to read this book.

Historia
Disability advocate Pen Meadows is on a mission; grab a breakfast sandwich, find her gate, and listen to her smutty audiobook. Only, the sexy, tall man in front of her at Tim Hortons may prove a worthwhile distraction. His soft Irish lilt and mix of gruff sweetness make Rowan Iverson unlike any man she’s ever met. After a brief meet/cute, and even briefer goodbye, the social media influencer ends up seated beside Rowan on a cross-country flight.

My favorite Melissa Whitney
Revisado: 10-11-24
How can a book be so charming and funny and heartfelt and gutting all at once?
And the performance was spectacular
Romance isn't my #1 most read genre, but Whitney is an auto-buy author. I love how much care she puts into everything she writes.

This book is so good! How on earth is this a debut novel?! I enjoyed the story, the dual timeline, and the way everything was satisfyingly deep. What a great romance story

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A quirky book about clever creatures?
Revisado: 04-09-23
On the surface this book is light and fluffy, but looks can be deceiving. Hidden beneath the bright cover and absurdity of an octopus narrator is a deep and compelling story about family and trauma. Each character brings deeper meaning into the other’s story and knits together the fabric of the story in a way that mimics the fabric of a family built from scratch.
Van Pelt did a remarkable job tying up loose ends and presents a strong stand-alone story with a satisfying end that is both unexpected and inevitable. While it pushes the extent of my tollerance for multiple POV, it does so with purpose.

Historia
Liz Rocher is coming home . . . reluctantly. As a Black woman, Liz doesn’t exactly have fond memories of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a predominantly white town. But her best friend is getting married, so she braces herself for a weekend of awkward, passive-aggressive reunions. Liz has grown, though; she can handle whatever awaits her. But on the night of the wedding, somewhere between dancing and dessert, the newlyweds’ daughter, Caroline, disappears—and the only thing left behind is a piece of white fabric covered in blood.

There’s no such thing as a perfect story
Revisado: 04-09-23
… but this one comes as close as a story gets! It’s not quite horror, it’s not quite thriller. There’s a deeper story hiding behind the eerie, atmospheric tension that makes this book hard to put down.
The book focuses on one woman’s experience, but uses her story to pain the picture of the state of this small town and the country in general by dabbling into themes of racism, trauma, prejudice, and the systemic racism built into the fabric of America.
Even the supernatural elements are founded in the meaning and importance of the constellations.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Classic Stephen king in every way but one
Revisado: 04-09-23
This is really more like three stories in one. The first being the story of a teen and an old man. Their relationship and the circumstances surrounding it are compelling. There is so much classic King in this section, and very much creates the grounding sense of real world that makes the extraordinary so much more compelling.
The middle transitions from the real word into the fantastical and also represents Charlie’s transformation into the extraordinary. Of the three components, the middle, from meeting goose girl through Claudia, moves the slowest. I struggled to determine if this was due to the story structure or the nature of how I consumed the book, so I’m not going to fault the novel without being certain.
The third portion is the sojourn into the city through the return to the real world. This portion really moves, and this is where all the backstory pays off.
