William Meikle is an undiscovered horror gem.
Revisado: 04-26-24
This is a tightly woven, terrifying folk tale. The pace of this story is sublime. And the creature at the center of it is horrifying — but enigmatic and serving a deeper purpose than your typical beastie. This isn’t your typical evil spirit out spreading its evil. This is something older and far scarier.
The narration is top-notch and compliments the environ of the story perfectly.
Last but not least, I loved how the story stuck the landing. It’s hard to find the right ending to a tale, but Meikle nails it.
I’m honestly shocked this author isn’t better known. I’ve been reading horror for decades and just stumbled onto his name thanks to Reddit. I’d compare his prose and style to that of Ramsey Campbell and Adam Nevill.
If you’re in the mood for a good grim slice of folk horror, I highly recommend this story.

On the Isle of Skye, near the community of Dunvegan, sits a rustic old one-bedroom home, waiting for a new tenant. It seems like the perfect opportunity for Jim Greenwood to escape the hectic London city life—a place to move on from tragedy.

Atmospheric Folk Horror at its Finest
Revisado: 04-26-24
Miekle’s prose is luxurious and the sense of place is exquisite. There’s an ethereal charm to the writing that I rarely see in modern Horror. The closest I can compare this novella to is the work of Ramsey Campbell.
The narrator’s voice provides all the right scotch-smoke tones for this misty island tale, and his cadence is perfect for the trancelike repetition of the central mysterious notes. No limbs. No limbs. No head. No head.
Listen to this one alone on a winter night with a glass of Talisker close at hand.

Historia
After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Inside, something deadly lies in wait.

Good Story hampered by stereotypes
Revisado: 03-06-23
Fantastic story in a colorful southern gothic setting is somewhat marred by the appearance of some pretty disappointing stereotyping regarding the family’s African-American maid. It’s a real shame too, because there is otherwise so much to love about this book.

Though she can't share the information with conventional law enforcement, Moss discovers that the missing SEAL was an astronaut aboard the spaceship USS Libra - a ship assumed lost to the currents of Deep Time. Great story, somewhat overwrought prose
Revisado: 02-26-23
While often pitched as Horror, this novel is more ideal for sci-fi fans who like grisly crime thrillers as a side-dish.
The sci-fi concepts are well-done, even if this sort of time-travel is fairly well-trod terrain. The plot is effectively twisty and pace is intense. The visual and thematic elements are efficiently grisly (think True Detective meets Event Horizon).
On the downside, the characters are somewhat bland and the prose veers toward overwrought—especially in the romance subplot.
Still, it’s a tight, scary read.

Amazing Ghost Story
Revisado: 02-20-23
Classic gothic horror — British style. This is one of James’s best and scariest short stories and it is well-rendered in audio form. To this day few horror stories manage to scare me as much as this one.

Sharply written and slyly structured. Even as one of M.R. James’s lesser works, it was thoroughly enjoyable.
