Historia
London 1887. For Maribel Campbell Lowe, the beautiful bohemian wife of a maverick politician, it is the year to make something of herself. A self-proclaimed Chilean heiress educated in Paris, she is torn between poetry and the new art of photography. But it is soon plain that Maribel's choices are not so simple. As her husband's career hangs by a thread, her real past, and the family she abandoned, come back to haunt them both.

Wry humor; excellent story
Revisado: 10-09-12
This is a compelling, engaging story, an evolving depiction of a 19th century woman's hidden identity. Clare Clark is not yet well known in the U.S., but her writing and her character development are excellent. I have read every one of her books, and this one is no disappointment.
One piece of advice: I had to listen to the first chapter a few times to remember the names of many children in that section. I found it was not necessary. The kids are peripheral and the narrative quickly focuses on a small set of adult characters.

Historia
Opening in Calcutta in the 1960s, Ghosh’s radiant second novel follows two families - one English, one Bengali - as their lives intertwine in tragic and comic ways. The narrator, Indian-born and English educated, traces events back and forth in time, through years of Bengali partition and violence, observing the ways in which political events invade private lives.

Excellent narrator. Master story teller.
Revisado: 04-22-11
Raj Varma's narration enhanced the experience of listening to a master story teller. His voice was fresh, appropriately nuanced and a pleasure to listen to. As always, Amitav Ghosh depicted characters with depth and sympathy. It is an old fashioned family tale and an exploration about what creates a family narrative and history. I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. I would have given 4.5 or 4.75 stars if possible.

Historia
Saul Dawson-Smith can memorise the sequence of a shuffled deck of cards in under a minute; he can recite pi to a thousand decimal places and he remembers every conversation he's ever had. He is 10-years-old. Howard McNamee is 28: lonely, overweight and poorly-educated. He lives in the north of England, far from the scene of his difficult Glasgow childhood, in the home he shared with his mother before she died. Through a series of unexpected events, these two solitary people find themselves forming an unlikely friendship.

A gentle story

The story is kind and nuanced, and the writing superb. Colin Moody's narration presented the various accents extremely well and enhanced the power of the novel for me.

Starting quietly and slowly, the story becomes mesmerizing as an exploration of two lives. The narrator masterfully conveys the voices of male and female, English and Irish characters.

Excellent in every way
Revisado: 10-29-07
This book has soul. Diaz creates an endearing, flawed group of characters, depicting them with humor and compassion. The narrator is so alive that he seemed to be a character himself. He truly is one of the best narrators I have heard, and my Audible library is large.
I am embarrasssed to admit that I did not know much about the history of the Dominican Republic before reading this book. Diaz wove the history into the story effortlessly and memorably. I highly recommend the book. It is one of the two best I have listened to, the other being The Hungry Tide, by Amitov Ghosh.
