Historia
As a coalition of species and planets fights to unseat the Imperium, Will, the only human on the Coalition War Council, is put forward as an unlikely poster boy for galactic harmony. His unremarkable home world and its unimportant species—humans—have come to the aid of a greater galaxy they didn't even know existed. With each battle won, breaking the shackles of the Imperium seems not only possible but inevitable… until old grievances and simmering rivalries spring up among the Coalition.

I love this whole universe! I am a sucker for a great story with a group of ragtag characters that do things that only they because of their differences. They fail and learn but they always rise to the occasion! Mark Boyett is quickly becoming one of my favorite narrators!

it took a few chapters to get rolling
Revisado: 09-17-24
I started this book 3 times before really getting into it. I really placed a lot of trust in the authors and the narrator to get me hooked. Jason, JN, and Mark didn't let me down in the slightest. I usually wait for a credit to drop before getting books on audible but I jumped ahead and bout the sequel because I couldn't get enough. I love these characters and the world built around them.

I really really love these characters. This is a masterclass in how to write likeable characters. The story is great but I haven't gotten this attached to characters in a while. I find myself worried to death that we might lose someone in the story at every turn. I am truly invested!

Historia
The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death. In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

I couldn't wait for this book
Revisado: 06-02-24
This is the episodic continuation of the galaxys edge story. The phenomenal old narrator couldn't do this book so they had Mark Boyett step up to the plate. Bray had some big shoes to fill but Boyett does an admiral job. I am looking forward to seeing if he keeps the characters consistent. Bray did a very good job of this and I hope Boyett can too.
As for the story, the saga continues. it answers many questions that were left after the last book of Season 2. I held off on writing a review for that one as for the first time, because I initially didn't like it. I was waiting for an answer to questions that shouldn't have been asked and got some satisfaction from this episode. I'll be back for the next one.

The year is 1989. America has just invaded Noriega's Panama. And Specialist Bennett's platoon of Cav Scouts are in country… with, frankly, not a whole lot to do. Until a freak rainstorm somehow transports the entire platoon—Humvees, weapons, and all—to another world. A world controlled by a wicked Aztec god. The Land of the Black Sun. In a heartbeat, the Scouts find themselves fighting for their lives against savage beasts, witches, zombies, subhuman tribes seeking sacrifices… and even themselves.

With the armies of the enemy smashed at the final battle for the desert port city, the Rangers return to their primary mission to do what they do best: eliminate a high-value target with extreme violence of action deep inside hostile territory. Failure is not an option—even if that target is a ten-thousand-year-old undead sorcerer of incredible power surrounded by dark, deadly cabals and savage monsters of myth and fable that are all too real.

Another fantastic tale from the Ruin!
Revisado: 05-05-24
I don't know how they write another book in a series and it is better than the last one every single time. I liked the side quest stories but I had really missed the way the story is told from Talker's perspective.
I am not a veteran but hold them in the highest regard. The way Talker tells the story makes him more relatable for the average listener than the other stories.
This review would not be complete without mentioning how good Christopher Ryan Grant's narration is. I couldn't imagine anyone else telling these stories.
Thanks for including the AAR. It really helps those of us understand a small part of what the life of Rangers is like and gives us an even more exalted view of them.

Fast paced and relatable characters
Revisado: 12-31-23
I have been reading physical science fiction books my whole life and have recently been drawn to their audiobook counterparts. What Oblivion Engine brings to the table is a great story that throws you into the action right off the bat while using the action to endear you to the characters.
The way that you meet new characters is reminiscent of 1980s action movies, but then it develops character like the classic plots of great science fiction. A LOT happens in the early part of the book, but it happens in a way that is very organic and doesn't feel forced. It feels like a 10 book series but reads like a collection of short stories about the same characters. There is an entire universe full of characters, lore, and story that is waiting to be discovered here!
I want to keep the review short and spoiler free because I want you to give it a listen.
The narrator does an excellent job of voicing the characters and even uses some voice effects to further separate the different characters. Normally, I listen to audiobooks at about 1.5 speed but his voice is engaging and animated enough that I only sped it up to about 1.2. Dramatic pauses and space between sentences seem to be the norm with audiobooks, and I appreciate that it isn't the case here.
Overall, I loved it and if you are a fan of the genre than Oblivion Engine won't disappoint!
When are we getting a sequel?

The battle begins against the Lich-Pharaoh as the Rangers go for a fatal strike against the Saurian-controlled Port of Sûstagul in the Land of Black Sleep. Brutal house-to-house fighting and relentlessly kinetic street battles erupt as special teams conduct high-value target raids against sorcerers, war chieftains, and deadly guilds of assassins in an effort to stop the Saur from joining forces with the powerful Nether Sorcerer. Failure lies around all the blind corners and damnation down every dark alley in this desperate bid to save civilization from the forces of darkness.

My newest favorite book series
Revisado: 08-23-22
I dont know of a book series that has gotten me more invested into the characters. In my opinion, a great story needs relatable characters more than anything else. I can handle a thin plot, or a pace that is faster or slower than I like if I love the characters in the story. I say that to say that I love these characters. The feel so real to me. When I read the first book in the series, I was hesitant because I was afraid the idea was to bold and abstract to be able to pull off. I never would have believed that I would have gotten to love every character the way that I love these guys.
Part of the magic of having great characters is relatability. Talker's character development is the best arc of course, being the protagonist. His aspirations are achievable although the pressure he puts on himself are not. I know this feeling even though our goals are not the same. Thats what makes him relatable. I was thrilled to hear more about Monroe in this installment. He is fast becoming one of my favorite characters out of any media. Thor seems pretty one dimensional but he also enjoyed some expansion in this one. Like Talker, I can't really talk about the ending. It really sets up the next book.
Whatever happens, don't leave me hanging guys. I'll buy every story in this series as long as you guys want to keep writing them.

The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true.... While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war.

Revisado: 06-25-22
I loved it. I wasn't really expecting to though. There is something almost mystical about how the Serenity crew gets in your soul that I was worried would not translate into a book but the author captured it perfectly. The narrator was pretty good too, although I feel he missed a little opportunity to emote more instead of just reading the text. However, I have also listened to RC Bray a lot in the last two years so those are big shoes to fill.
Its definitely worth your time if you were a fan of the show and movie, but even more if you haven't seen them. This is a good starting point into a hopefully booming franchise.

Revisado: 05-02-22
I don't think I have ever identified with a literary character more than I have with Talker. He represents the struggle that we have with being good enough and the question if you even belong so why try. His arc to this point in the story is tough to follow, and as he often says, "warts and all." It's tough, but you can't help but want to know how he deals. The ending of this audiobook broke my 10 year slump of actually reading a physical book because I HAD to know what happened next.
Check this out if you love Military fiction, Fantasy, or a reluctant hero stories.
