Historia
Following the disastrous Java Sea campaign, the Allies went on the offensive in the Pacific in a desperate attempt to halt the Japanese forces that were rampaging across the region. With the conquest of Australia a very real possibility, the stakes were high. Their target: the Japanese-held Soloman Islands, in particular the southern island of Guadalcanal. Hamstrung by arcane pre-war thinking and a bureaucratic mind-set, the US Navy had to adapt on the fly in order to compete with the mighty Imperial Japanese Navy, whose ingenuity had fostered the creation of its Pacific empire.

My Fourth Book On Guadalcanal
Revisado: 01-03-20
My fourth book on Guadalcanal. Naturally, hard to put 6 months of battle in anything succinct. Cox does a good job and there are a number of things I learned. Unfortunately the narrator repeatedly made me cringe as he never got Japanese pronunciation correct. Other than that though I liked his style.
The book ends after the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands and therefore cuts out several significant naval and land engagements. I would have liked a bit more detail on the engagements but it's a huge topic he chose.

Historia
General Stonewall Jackson was like no one anyone had ever seen. In April of 1862 he was merely another Confederate general with only a single battle credential in an army fighting in what seemed to be a losing cause. By middle June he had engineered perhaps the greatest military campaign in American history and was one of the most famous men in the Western World. He had given the Confederate cause what it had recently lacked: hope.

One of the best I've read.
Revisado: 11-16-16
I very much enjoy Audible. Have listened to at least 100 books. This is one of my favorites. Not only the interesting anecdotes and details into Stonewall's character but those of his contemporaries and enemies. The author's ability to describe a battle and give me a sense of timing, strategy and even a closeup peak at the action is comparable to the best battlefield historians I've read.
The narrator is fabulous. He uses the author's exquisite pacing precisely how I believe she would have wanted it.
The book is not just informative but compelling. May I also say, her depiction of Stonewall and his faith is actually the most unique I've ever heard in that she shows his quirks yet overlays it with his true virtue as a Christian.

Historia
On the killing ground that was the island of Guadalcanal, a 2,000-yard-long ridge rose from the jungle canopy. Behind it lay the all-important air base of Henderson Field. And if Henderson Field fell, it would mean the almost certain death or capture of all 12,500 marines on the island. But the marines positioned on the ridge were no normal fighters - they were the hard-fighting men of Edson's Raiders, an elite fighting unit within an already elite Marine Corps.

Historia
It was the best of times and the worst of times for Hollywood before the war. The box office was booming, and the studios’ control of talent and distribution was as airtight as could be hoped. But the industry’s relationship with Washington was decidedly uneasy - hearings and investigations into allegations of corruption and racketeering were multiplying, and hanging in the air was the insinuation that the business was too foreign, too Jewish, too "un-American" in its values and causes. Could an industry this powerful in shaping America’s mind-set really be left in the hands of this crew?

What did you love best about Five Came Back?
I very much enjoyed the bios of 5 of the most famous movie directors America produced. The vignettes about some of my favorite movies as well as period stars was tantalizing. Harris tells fascinating stories about WW2 through the lives of these extraordinary men. I really liked this book. The narrator was excellent as well.

What would have made Badass: Ultimate Deathmatch better?
Dispense with the foul language and crude manner. I guess I should have known better. In this case you sure CAN know a book by it's cover.
What was most disappointing about Ben Thompson’s story?
High on crudity and very low on facts with regard to the story. I only listened to the Assyrian Persian and Greek sections and turned it off. This book is awful.
Any additional comments?
This book is more geared toward a juvenile delinquent. This is a first for me on Audible. Never have I outright rejected a book I've downloaded in all the years I've subscribed.

Historia
With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Neptune’s Inferno is at once the most epic and the most intimate account ever written of the contest for control of the seaways of the Solomon Islands.

Hornfischer does it again.
Revisado: 02-05-11
Just like The Last Stand Of The Tin Can Sailors, Hornfischer draws me into a sometimes chaotic battle, and this one far greater in scope and length than the previous, giving me just enough detail without losing the big picture. His descriptions aren't cumbersome or tedious but paint an epic of heroes, monstrous destructive machines and the struggles of men just like you and I. I've read several books on the Guadalcanal Campaign and Neptune's Inferno with ease, reveals the desperate situation the USA as well as the USN grappled with in the Summer of 1942. He made me yearn to hear more of the plight of the Marines and Cactus Airforce but gave enough to round out the telling and still stay focused. Perhaps in another book?

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Revisado: 02-05-11
What a lovely writer and what a wonderful story. I am grateful that Laura Hillenbrand herself is "Unbroken" and has had the "resilience" to fashion another tale that inspires us. Her descriptions of Louie's redemption is told with an objectivity that doesn't lose the deep intimacy and as she describes it, "beauty", of how his life was changed. Fascinating to learn that over 100,000 Japanese POWs credit Hiroshima for saving their lives. Tragic is the price they paid at the hands of their captors for the rest of their lives.

The Last Stand of Fox Company is a fast-paced and gripping account of heroism and self-sacrifice in the face of impossible odds. The authors have conducted dozens of firsthand interviews with the battle's survivors, and they narrate the story with the immediacy of such classic accounts of single battles as Guadalcanal Diary, Pork Chop Hill, and Black Hawk Down.

Historia
Christmas has become synonymous with shopping, overindulging, competition, and stress. But according to Mike Huckabee (who was a pastor before getting into politics), that was never God's intention. Going back to the nativity, Christmas is supposed to be about simple things: faith, love, family, and hope. The hard part, in today's crazy world, is remembering that those simple things are the most precious of all.

Just like Huckabee
Revisado: 04-25-10
This book is indeed just like Huckabee, humorous, entertaining, insightul, and truth revealing. You get a great view of the down to earth lifestyle of a man and wife who live what they believe. It is interesting to here Huckabee's side as he reveals the reality of how the press can twist and distort truth to meet their preconceived ideas and agendas. My wife and I enjoyed it to the point we didn't want it to end.
