Historia
In this vivid and alluring history, medievalist Anthony Bale invites listeners on an odyssey across the medieval world. Journeying alongside scholars, spies, and saints, from Western Europe to the Far East, the Antipodes and the ends of the earth, Bale provides indispensable information on the exchange rate between Bohemian ducats and Venetian groats, medieval cures for seasickness, and how to avoid extortionist tour guides and singing sirens.

Bit Academic
Revisado: 05-06-25
The information was interesting, but it kept losing my focus as it read a bit academically, rather than for general consumption. Not memorable at all. Overall, I wish I'd have kept the credit.

Historia
In this account of Europe’s rise to world leadership in technology, Frances and Joseph Gies make use of recent scholarship to destroy two time-honored myths. Myth One: that Europe’s leap forward occurred suddenly in the “Renaissance,” following centuries of medieval stagnation. Myth Two: that Europe achieved its primacy through “Western” superiority.

Good Info, Bit Dry
Revisado: 04-15-25
I felt like the text was quite dry after being attracted by the attention grabbing title. It has the air of a thesis about it.

Historia
What won't we try in our quest for perfect health, beauty, and the fountain of youth? Well, just imagine a time when doctors prescribed morphine for crying infants. When liquefied gold was touted as immortality in a glass. And when strychnine - yes, that strychnine, the one used in rat poison - was dosed like Viagra. Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices.

I like the content and the book is well written, but I just couldn't get through it with this narrator.

Another excellent book from Liza
Revisado: 10-26-23
Another wonderful history from the same author. Super interesting and very specific to the period named, rather than just general information. I really enjoyed it. Reading the performances of Liza's books can be hit and miss, but this one is excellent.

Historia
Mindfulness has been shown in clinical trials to be an effective way of reducing stress. It is a form of focused awareness that helps to prevent the runaway thinking that gives rise to physical and emotional hyper-arousal. The two meditations in this audiobook help us to develop this transformative quality of mindfulness and to practice acceptance of our present-moment experience in a non-judgmental way - in particular, with their emphasis is on learning to "be comfortable with discomfort".

Not a Traditional Guided Meditation
Revisado: 02-24-16
Not at all the type of imagery-based guided medirations many are used to, this recording seems merely instructional - simply teaching awarenwss of physical sensations. If you're looking for exploration and relaxation through guided meditation and imagery, this is not the book for you.

Historia
At the age of 25, during the summer of 2012, Dan found his ideal home, the fact that it was nearly 100 miles of canal away from his workplace, friends, and family gave him a rough and ready introduction to what it meant to own a boat as his first task was to travel the slow way home... in his home.

Excellent Account

I adored hearing about the trials and joys of Dan, a new narrowboat owner, especially in his own voice. Quite well written, and I hope he does another book!

Historia
Part biography, part cultural history, The Creation of Anne Boleyn is a fascinating reconstruction of Anne’s life and an illuminating look at her afterlife in the popular imagination. Why is Anne so compelling? Why has she inspired such extreme reactions? What did she really look like? Was she the flaxen-haired martyr of Romantic paintings or the raven-haired seductress of twenty-first-century portrayals? (Answer: Neither.) And perhaps the most provocative questions concern Anne’s death more than her life.
