Historia
Based on a true story from the early 1900s, this work of historical fiction gives life to murderer William Kleeman, a handsome young farmer from Southwestern Minnesota who courts the beautiful Maud Petri. After a quick engagement and marriage, the couple produces four children and is joined by boarder Mary Snelling, who teaches at the country school across the road. This addictive story winds through many twists before ending in a deadly rampage that results in one of the most notorious ax murders in American history.

Well Done
Revisado: 01-04-22
The research was great! I live nearby and had to go visit these locations myself. Some of the assumptions about female characters and their thought processes was a bit misogynistic and outdated, although veiled in a “it was just the times!” air. I wish the women depicted had been given more substance.

Great Research
Revisado: 01-04-22
First of all, I want to say that the research was fantastic, and I am a complete believer in their conclusion. The amount of time and effort put into tracking down this killer’s identity is shown in the amount of information presented. The ending was concise, thoughtful, and convincing. I thought about these crimes in a way I never had before: the killer was a human, with a name. Not a nameless monster.
Like many others, I thought the writing style was off. I also found some of his conclusions and generalizations off putting. Something that is important for me to point out is that he claimed child molesters like children and are friendly with them. One of the suspects for the Moore murders disliked children and was impatient with them. The author claims that because of this, he can be discounted as a potential murderer (sadly one of the little girls was sexually molested after death). Child predators certainly can, and do, act disdainful and impatient with kids. We have seen this with various cases solved by DNA, particularly in April Tinsley’s murder. Her murderer was a child molester and killer, but he did not like children or try to befriend them. These kinds of generalizations can be dangerous, and frankly they overstep his profession. There are other jokes and comments he made in the book which I found to be a bit odd, but as long as you shrug them off you can get a lot out of this book.
