Historia
It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist - the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind.

Fantastic Read
Revisado: 10-04-24
I am so glad that I kept listening to this audiobook. I almost gave up on it a couple of times near the beginning, but I'm happy I didn't.
The protagonist, in the beginning, seems like a highly dislikable woman. it is hard to feel sympathy for her. however, I did grow to care about her in time thanks to the slow but steady change in her character from dislikable to kind. The narrative itself is extremely engaging and well researched. There are enough developments, twists, and turns to keep you reading all night.
Overall, I felt the narration was done very well. however, I have to admit that, especially early on in the book, I found the voice used for Enid to be extremely irritating. however, that also fits her character in the beginning. Although it is not quite perfect, I highly recommend this audiobook.

Historia
The ancient curse of Carnaby Castle has begun taking victims again—either that, or someone’s very cleverly done away with the new young bride of the philandering family patriarch, and the chief suspect is none other than Carnaby, London’s finest club steward. Anty Boisjoly’s wits and witticisms are tested to their frozen limit as he sifts the superstitions, suspicions, and age-old schisms of the mediaeval Peak District village of Hoy to sort out how it was done before Carnaby’s served his last scotch-and-soda.

My Only Complaint: I Need More!
Revisado: 05-01-23
This novel encompasses the intriguing mystery, intricate plot development, interesting characters, engaging humor, and Old World charm that I have come to expect from PJ Fitzsimmons novels. it is another great cozy Detective mystery and my only complaint about it is that it is the last book, at least at this time, in the series. (Please, sir, may we have some more?)
Anty is as funny and insightful as ever, the cast of characters is just quirky enough to be fun without becoming absurd, and the twist and turns in the mystery will keep you guessing. All of it is delivered in a performance nothing short of excellent. The narrator brings you into the tale and keeps you engaged. if you enjoy good historic cozy detective stories, you need this audiobook in your library.

There’s a literary niche for all tastes including those who think that either Agatha Christie wasn’t funny enough or that PG Wodehouse didn’t feature anywhere near as many baffling murders as he could have. The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cozy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse.

Fun and Enjoyable, but Could Be Improved Upon
Revisado: 01-27-22
3.5/5 This is what I like to refer to as ice cream in book form. It is light reading, fun and enjoyable, and I certainly liked listening to it. However, I feel that a use of historical and mythological information could have improved the storyline a bit.
Things such as noblemen serving themselves at dinner, obvious place names, light world building, and lack of details about things such as weapons and fighting styles made these a 3.5 rather five star book. I liked it, but I could not help feeling that it only partially lived up to its potential.
Nonetheless, there are far too few reverse Harem Romance novels involving pay males, in my humble opinion, so I would still recommend this novel if you enjoy such things. It is certainly a lot of fun and makes for great Light reading. if you are looking at for a little little Gary ice cream probably enjoy this series.

Slow at First, but Highly Enjoyable
Revisado: 12-22-21
Although not my favorite Drizzt novel, perhaps, this book was very good. I admit that it was a little difficult for me to get into in the beginning, but before long Salvatore drew me in with his usual magic and I became eager to see what would become of the beloved characters. With some unexpected twists and turns, this novel delivered a satisfying conclusion that, happily, seems to hint at more adventures to come.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Historia
It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card.

A Rare Christmas Treat for Fans of Sherlock Holmes
Revisado: 12-20-21
I've read quite a few works of Sherlockian fiction, but many of them fall short of the original stories. This is not one of those. Lovegrove does an excellent job capturing the spirit, characters, and tone of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved detective mysteries. If you love tales of Sherlock Holmes and his intrepid chronicler Watson, but have read all of Conan Doyle's works multiple times, I recommend this intriguing Christmas mystery.

Perfect True Fireside Tales!
Revisado: 11-15-21
The short accounts of true hauntings in this collection were exactly what I was looking for: one part history and one part ghost story with a dash of folklore mixed in! The presentation is marvelous with none of the banal small talk or fumbling performances that ruins so many ghosy story podcasts. This is the perfect treat for a night by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate or cider, a few candles, a warm blanket, and a companion to share it all with!
