Historia
Lois Gibbs, Luella Kenny, and other mothers loved their neighborhood on the east side of Niagara Falls. It had an elementary school, a playground, and rows of affordable homes. In the spring of 1977, pungent odors began to seep into these little houses, and it didn’t take long for worried mothers to identify the curious scent. It was the sickly-sweet smell of chemicals.

Anyone who grew up in the late 70s remembers Love Canal. The people in this book that fought for the legislation and remediation should be congratulated for not giving up and for changing the attitudes of the nation.

Historia
When it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that "the science is settled." In reality, the long game of telephone from research to reports to the popular media is corrupted by misunderstanding and misinformation. Core questions - about the way the climate is responding to our influence, and what the impacts will be - remain largely unanswered. The climate is changing, but the why and how aren't as clear as you've probably been led to believe.

Great Explanation
Revisado: 06-27-23
I found this book to be an easy quick read, that clearly explained some of the issues and ambiguity in climate science. To be clear, the author states several times that a) it's clear the climate is changing, and b) humans are having an influence. However, he explains very well how imprecise and subjective some of the science is around impacts, scope of impacts, and timing.
It was very interesting to see how the data gets misrepresented to tie it to a specific narrative, which is not completely surprising. I wish he had included a bit more about potential solutions, but it was nice to hear at least some discussion on geoengineering and adaptation.
Hard book to do on audio, as there are a lot of related graphs, charts.

Along the way, she encounters mass fatality investigators, embalmers, and a former executioner who is responsible for ending sixty-two lives. Historia
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Fantastic and depressing all at the same time. Would have liked a bit deeper discussion about the potential partnership and/or future interaction between China and Russia, but overall I'm guessing he's spot on with the predictions.

Good but Repetitive
Revisado: 02-18-23
Great topic and explained well. However it seems like he had to work hard to stretch an essay into a book. It seemed like the same concepts were explained in multiple ways. Interspersed with a healthy dose of Marxist theory.

Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Historia
Here is the behind-the-scenes story of how the United States forged its wartime alliance with Britain, told from the perspective of three key American players in London: Edward R. Murrow, Averell Harriman, and John Gilbert Winant. Drawing from a variety of primary sources, Olson skillfully depicts the dramatic personal journeys of these men who, determined to save Britain from Hitler, helped convince a cautious Franklin Roosevelt and a reluctant American public to support the British at a critical time.

Historia
Stephanie Kelton's brilliant exploration of modern monetary theory (MMT) dramatically changes our understanding of how we can best deal with crucial issues ranging from poverty and inequality to creating jobs, expanding health care coverage, climate change, and building resilient infrastructure. Any ambitious proposal, however, inevitably runs into the buzz saw of how to find the money to pay for it, rooted in myths about deficits that are hobbling us as a country.
