Historia
The story of a truly galactic civilization with more than 6,000 inhabited worlds. Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand is a science-fiction masterpiece, an essay on the inexplicability of sexual attractiveness, and an examination of interstellar politics among far-flung worlds. First published in 1984, the novel's central issues - technology, globalization, gender, sexuality, and multiculturalism - have only become more pressing with the passage of time.

I guess technically you can call it SF
Revisado: 12-16-24
Seemed more like social engineering with aliens instead of humans (although some are called 'human'). I'm all for live and let live. When I put the headphones on I want to be transported to different realities with a good story and well developed characters that I care about. There was no discernable point to this other than a questioning of societal 'norms'. The writing was ok-ish from a writing standpoint. Don't run into this often but this was one that was like a radio playing in the background as I did other things and when something interesting may have been playing I paid attention.

One of the smartest and prescient books I’ve read in a long time

This story will scare you with how close it is to reality and what is probably very close to what is actually happening. The story develops well and is easily followed. This should be required reading for anyone who votes to know what questions to ask those who are supposed to be working for us!

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Wow! Just wow!
Revisado: 12-03-22
I’ve heard references to this book and never really thought more about it. I listened to this straight through. It is so well written and the narration is spot on! It is tough in spots and necessarily so. Do yourself a favor and experience this book!

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

Great book read by a great narrator
Revisado: 04-24-22
Wil Wheaton was a fantastic choice on many levels as narrator of this book. He makes it come alive and even through the highly technical aspects ( which I love as an engineer) makes you want to care! This is a wonderful book which is superbly acted through voice alone!

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Gave me the feels!
Revisado: 11-15-21
I am a hard sci fi reader. Occasionally I’ll read other fiction but not often. This book and J. K. Simmons performance (yes it was a performance!) of it was one of the best I’ve experienced thus far. The story was fantastic and the reading was superior. This book was recommended to me by my mother because there are many traits in Ove that my father shares and she was right. I thought it was going to be just a funny story about a crotchety old man set in his ways. It’s was so much more and I can’t say enough about the reading. I highly recommend this performance to everyone!
