Historia
Schopenhauer is considered to be the most accessible of German philosophers. This book gives a succinct explanation of his metaphysical system, concentrating on the original aspects of his thought, which inspired many artists and thinkers including Nietzsche, Wagner, Freud, and Wittgenstein. Schopenhauer's central notion is that of the will-a blind, irrational force that he uses to interpret both the human mind and the whole of nature.

Get familiar with the greats
Revisado: 03-04-25
These little “introductions” are a very enjoyable way to become familiar with the canonical philosophers before diving deeply into full works. The narrator has a full deep voice that is pleasurable to listen to but he does pronounce a few words like “Nietzsche” a bit oddly. Definitely recommend if you are trying to get a general understanding of Schopenhauer.

Historia
Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 07-20-24
Aside from the A+ level prose in this book, what really was so satisfying to me was how much it was NOT the pornographic smut I was anticipating. Maybe I was naive, but I really expected some sort of Marquis De Sade type tale. What I really found was an intriguing book about the less than romantic experience of getting exactly what you wished for and how it’s never what you thought. If you’re nervous to read something with this kind of premise I encourage you to wade into the warm pool. You’ll be far more delighted than you expected to be.

I respect Wolff a lot was interested to read him. But this is intro level. Good for someone brand new to Marxism. Not all that insightful for someone more knowledgeable. But high quality audio.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Don’t miss out
Revisado: 03-04-22
As a man I have spent my life avoiding books like this. Sure there was nothing in it for me. I realize now what a folly that was. This book has tremendous prose style, funny characters, and a engaging story. I enjoyed the narrator quite a bit though the male voices are probably the weakest. This era might not be everyone’s taste but I think it’s worth a shot. The historical perspective is very interesting, and makes me eager to read more of Jane Austen. Don’t be a loser - read this book!

Historia
The Jungle is the story of Jurgis Rudkus, a Slavic immigrant who marries frail Ona Lukoszaite and seeks security and happiness as a workman in the Chicago stockyards. Once there, he is abused by foremen, his meager savings are filched by real estate sharks, and at every turn he is plagued by the misfortunes arising from poverty, poor working conditions, and disease. Finally, in accordance with Sinclair’s own creed, Rudkus turns to socialism as a way out.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 02-03-22
The horrors the characters experience in this book are haunting. Crucial reading to understand the history of working people in this county. And why all working people must rise up together - our unity is our only salvation!
Also, tremendous narration. Old timey sounding a bit with the slightest twinge of a smirk. Exactly the right tone for the book’s content.
