This engrossing piece of undercover reportage has been a fixture on the New York Times best seller list since its publication. With nearly a million copies in print, Nickel and Dimed is a modern classic that deftly portrays the plight of America's working-class poor.

A true eye opener
Revisado: 01-20-25
An honest and sincere account of a keen observation of the world of the American working class. The writing is as gripping as a novel. But sadly, it is a true story. That’s why this book is so powerful. I was deeply touched and humbled by this read.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Interesting story of unreal characters
Revisado: 04-10-24
The story drags for too long in the first half but picks up nicely with twists and turns in the second. After finishing the book, I still found all the main characters - Elisabeth, Calvin, Madeline, 6:30 - too unreal, and a bit too hard to be liked. Comparatively, the supporting characters are much more credible and in some cases, much more likable.

Historia
Elegy plus comedy is the only way to express how we live in the world today, says a character in Sigrid Nunez’s ninth novel. The Vulnerables offers a meditation on our contemporary era, as a solitary female narrator asks what it means to be alive at this complex moment in history and considers how our present reality affects the way a person looks back on her past.

A novel?
Revisado: 11-22-23
I would have given it a higher rating if it were not called “A Novel”. What is the story line, except that the bird was gone with the housemate? The book should best be described as a collection of personal anecdotes interspersed with some boring imaginary tales. The author may be a good observer and a diligent student who knows how to put her acquired knowledge in eloquent words and in a seemingly ‘interesting’ time of human history. But no, being disguised as a writer to tell the story with details that surprise nobody does not make it a novel.

Historia
Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

Grounding and invigorating
Revisado: 01-14-22
I wonder why some readers find reading or listening to this book depressing. Quite the opposite, the author skillfully and convincingly brings us back to the reality that most of us fail or are reluctant to see. Being able to see that reality clearly is most embowering!

Historia
The corporatisation of the contemporary university has sped up the clock. In The Slow Professor, Maggie Berg and Barbara K. Seeber discuss how adopting the principles of the Slow movement in academic life can counter this erosion of humanistic education. Focusing on the individual faculty member and his or her own professional practice, Berg and Seeber present both an analysis of the culture of speed in the academy and ways of alleviating stress while improving teaching, research, and collegiality.

Good content, not so good performance
Revisado: 10-31-20
The content resonates deeply. The authors understand the current academic culture, give precise diagnosis, and offer advise that are both thoughtful and useful.
The narration of the book often sounds like it is delivered by AI, instead of a human being. If it were not for my deep interest in this topic, it would have been difficult to sustain my attention. The narrator also seemed to get all the chapter numbers wrong, which can be confusing if one does not finish reading in one sitting.
