This is a good detective story and really filled with details and character building which, at times, seemed gratuitous and slowed the tempo of the book a tiny bit - but then again, this is the autor’s style. Overall a good read.

This was a bookclub call so I read it, not very excitedly at first because it seemed to be that it could somewhat predictable. The format brings the spy story during the war and her story as a middle age, traumatized woman. But there are way more parallels to be drawn which I won’t describe here to avoid spoilers, and the way she integrated both narratives was not only convincing but skilled.
I enjoyed listening to it quite a bit and at the end missed the main characters because they were well developed.
I don’t know if I would have liked this book so much if it wasn’t for the narrator, she did a brilliant job with inflections, prosody, pace and the many accents and different gender voices. Truly amazing and I can only hope she is well compensated for it!

This is one of the books in detective Dan Riley series and, like the others, it is a story with all the elements of a good detective novel. The tempo of the prose, the details, the red herrings, the voice of both main characters and the ends meeting at the end - all piecing together. Dan Riley is an empathetic character and I love the way she constructed it. Last but not least, I absolutely loved the narrator. He interpreted characters with accurate emotional tone - had it been another narrator, I’m not so sure I would have had such a good time reading it, even though it’s a good book.

This is a well narrated book of a historical character in the late 1700s America, a midwife, a healer, a mother, wife and someone who could be trusted in her community but who also roughed feathers against patriarchy. The story circles a murder, but it seems to me that the murder becomes secondary. I think you’ll enjoy it; it flowed quite fast, it’s well written and the narrator is very good. I really appreciate the author’s note at the end of the book setting the record straight about how much was fiction and creative freedom, and what was actually historical.

This was my first Anna Quindlen and I loved it in so many ways! I chuckled, I cried, I mesmerized. The prose is nuanced and well crafted describing behaviors, thoughts and intentions of the characters. Hope Davis’ narration was simply amazing, she interpreted each phrase, each pause with so much attention. It totally elevated the story, which didn’t really need elevation but I cannot imagine it having any other voice at this point.

I wish I hadn’t read reviews that told me what the book was about, so I’m going to say this: this book is character driven, the writing is lovely, the story will make you laugh, it’ll make you wonder and it’ll shock you too. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I like a good Slater mystery, but this one was not really probable at all so the pieces felt disjointed at the end. Narrator was excellent but the narration itself had a couple of glitches (as if paused and returned which seemed a bit patchy). Overall enjoyable.

I enjoy Slater mysteries, and this one doesn’t disappoint. All the elements of a nicely structured thriller were there. Whereas I could guess one core premise from the start, the book took a nice little turn that I didn’t predict., which always pleases me.

Much has been said about this book in its form and content so here’s what I’ll say: I had put it down after the first story, finding it dull. But then I gave it another chance, and I’m so glad I did! I was enthralled by his prose and knowledge of politics, history, philosophy, economy and the arts. The actual construction of the book totally captivated me! It felt as if I was in a roller coaster with a long and slow incline, and then an amazing flow on the descent. Totally deserved the Pulitzer!

This is one of the typical Rick Mofina’s thrillers - you get glued to the story. Despite the titles (usually pretty silly, if you ask me), the stories are rich of detail. Read it in order, since it’s a series of investigative reporter Jack Gannon. This time he’s at it again, curious, intuitive, always sniffing potentially lethal situations to get a good story. He’s persistent but not annoying, and he is just. Mofina is consistent in develop his characters and in threading his plot well, so you are left with mini cliffhangers throughout the book. The narrator was skillful, and made the story compelling.

This is my fifth RM’s book. I read all Tom Reed series before and loved it. This one takes 4.5 stars. I like how the author intertwines detective work and investigative journalism - he does that with skill.

Panic Zone is kind of a tall order, though, delivering a mystery that covers one too many characters and countries. I grew up in Brazil and can tell that he did his research when he described the people, the places. I knew he would tie them all together at the end - and he did, masterfully, but it felt a bit too long at times and that is why it’s not getting my five stars.
But since I like his style a lot, I’m going to read the other one in the series, In Desperation.
