Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes

What did you like best about this story?

His various accents and comic timing were highly entertaining, and his matter-of-fact account of living under apartheid made this unique among all the books I listened to last year.

What does Trevor Noah bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hearing Trevor's story in his own voice made for a richer experience than I think I would have had by simply reading it. I loved his impression of his grandmother.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both. He exposed the horrors of apartheid without casting himself as helpless victim (though he was indeed a victim). Hard to believe he's only in his mid-30s, given all that has happened in his life. I laughed at him trying to win arguments with his mother, or pull the wool over her eyes. And the obvious love he has for his mother is truly heartwarming.

Would you try another book from Cara Black and/or Carine Montbertrand?

I've read five or six of Cara Black's books; this is the first audio recording I've chosen. I will continue to read Black, but I won't listen to Montbertrand. I may have underrated the story, but it's only because I couldn't finish the audiobook.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Haven't finished it yet -- I have the book in my library and will read it the old-fashioned way.

Would you be willing to try another one of Carine Montbertrand’s performances?

Not if she tries to alter her voice for different characters. She just doesn't know how to do it without making all of them sound the same, sort of drugged and sleepy. Better narrators make it easy to distinguish one character from another. She'd have been better off just using her regular voice throughout.

Do you think Murder in Clichy needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Don't know yet.
