Historia
Sarah has been receiving threatening anonymous letters seemingly from a former lover. Just one day after revealing this information to her co-worker Nancy, Sarah is shot and found in her bedroom by one of her past flames, Donald. Desperate to clear any evidence of Donald's presence at the scene for her own infatuations, Nancy finds herself as the key suspect when she is discovered in the apartment. As the real killer uses the situation to their advantage, Bennett crafts a tense and nuanced story through flashbacks to Sarah's life and loves.

A Most Peculiar Murder Mystery
Revisado: 11-06-24
Whichever way you look at it: as a most peculiar murder mystery, or as an intricate stream-of- thought romance - narrator Charlotte Strevens is certainly one of the 3 best narrators I have ever had the pleasure of listening to!

Historia
It is a dark and misty night, and bachelors Nicholas and Ian are driving to the ball at Fordings, a beautiful concert hall in the countryside. There waits the charming Dilys Maine, and a party buzzing with rumours of one Rosemary Reeve who disappeared on the eve of this event the previous year. With thoughts of this mysterious case ringing in their ears, Dilys and Nicholas strike a stranger on the drive back home, launching a new investigation and unwittingly reviving the search for what really became of Rosemary Reeve.

Very Dissappointing
Revisado: 08-30-24
Easy to understand why ECRL did not publish this book; reading it felt like listening to GoogleMaps, on steroids; too much attention to description of driving, roads and traffic, too little attention to plot - a clear case of "you can't see the wood for the trees" - avoid.

Historia
London, 1945. The capital is shrouded in the darkness of the blackout, and mystery abounds in the parks after dusk. During a stroll through Regent's Park, Bruce Mallaig witnesses two men acting suspiciously around a footbridge. In a matter of moments, one of them has been murdered; Mallaig's view of the assailant but a brief glimpse of a ghastly face in the glow of a struck match. The murderer's noiseless approach and escape seems to defy all logic, and even the victim's identity is quickly thrown into uncertainty.

First-Class Narrator Fit for a Most Peculiar Story
Revisado: 08-16-24
I really cannot tell whether it is the story, or the narrator, which were more outstanding (or outlandish) - definitely a buy, and a must-hear!

Historia
At a costume party with the dubious theme of 'famous murderers and their victims', the know-it-all amateur criminologist Roger Sheringham is settled in for an evening of beer, small talk and analysing his companions. One guest in particular has caught his attention for her theatrics, and his theory that she might have several enemies among the partygoers proves true when she is found hanging from the 'decorative' gallows on the roof terrace. Noticing a key detail which could implicate a friend in the crime, Sheringham decides to meddle with the scene.

A Twisted Tale of Upside-down Murder
Revisado: 05-25-24
I was under the impression that nobody could even come close to Ngaio Marsh but, dash it, I was wrong! Here ABerkley gives us a well constructed tale (with very few mistakes) which is enclosed top to bottom in Ronald Stratton's cottage and which is sprinkled with a heavy dose of British humour. Read and enjoy. The Narrator is an acquired taste - but I think he does a very good job, and shines especially in the more theatrical scenes of the story.

Historia
A sinister case of deadly poisoned chocolates from Sodbury Cross's high street shop haunts the group of friends and relatives assembled at Bellegarde, among the orchards of 'peach-fancier' Marcus Chesney. To prove a point about how the sweets could have been poisoned under the nose of the shopkeeper, Chesney stages an elaborate memory game to test whether any of his guests can see beyond their 'black spectacles'; that is, to see the truth without assumptions as witnesses.

Good Story, One Rant
Revisado: 05-04-24
Good story, with adequate (if somewhat wanting) character development; if only the voice chosen by the Narrator for the story's main detective (Inspector Elliot) would not have been one of a whining 4th grader...

Historia
In the Welsh borders, isolated by heavy snow and flooding from the thaw, cut off from telephone access, a tragedy has occurred. Old Dr Robinson known to be 'a menace' on the roads has met his end in a car crash, his big saloon thrown from the track down the steep hillside. But when the police arrive there is more to the tragedy than meets the eye: why was there a second body - an outsider to these parts - in the back of the vehicle?

Nice setting but average plot; very technical, without too much character development, though Revers comes up as a sharp and likeable fellow; think I'll go back to Ngaio Marsh ...

Historia
The Pax Britannica trilogy is Jan Morris’ magnificent history of the British Empire from 1837 to 1965. This final volume charts the decline and dissolution of what was once the largest empire the world had known. From the first signs of decay in the imperial ambition in the Boer Wars, through the global shifts in power evident in the two World Wars, it offers a perspective that is honest, evocative, and occasionally elegiac.

Historia
Over 100 years since it was first published Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow addresses subjects which are still relevant today – perhaps more so! Being hard up, being in the blues and being in love are just some aspects of the human condition on which Jerome K. Jerome reflects in his unique whimsical fashion. These insights are not given for the benefit of our education however, for as he says in his introduction, “This book would not elevate a cow.'

Historia
After his final trip up the river Thames with his three companions - - Harris, George, and Montmorency the dog - - Jerome K. Jerome sat down to write his proposed book, The Story of the Thames. But before he could tackle the work in the serious manner intended, his humor took over and gave birth to a masterpiece of unquenchable comedy. This is a classic of English humor, justifiably loved around the world.
