Historia
"Mom seems off." Her brother's words echo in Sam Montgomery's ear as she turns onto the quiet North Carolina street where their mother lives alone. She brushes the thought away as she climbs the front steps. Sam's excited for this rare extended visit, and looking forward to nights with just the two of them, drinking boxed wine, watching murder mystery shows, and guessing who the killer is long before the characters figure it out. But stepping inside, she quickly realizes home isn’t what it used to be.

good story but tedious getting there
Revisado: 07-04-24
This is an interesting story and it's a good thing that the main character was funny, but the humor wasn't enough to overcome the pacing. I was bored through the first 60-70% of the book.

Not for me
Revisado: 05-28-23
I wanted to hear more about the actual red tree, but that's not what this turned out to be. The story didn't go anywhere satisfying, and the ambiguity was too ambiguous- less thought provoking and more just head scratching. I also really disliked the main character.
I liked the male narrator but the main character narrator voice just didn't seem to fit. There was just too much I didn't like so it dragged the whole experience down too low to give it a good rating.

Historia
In the tourist town of Wharton, on the coast of Lake Superior, Tess Bell is renovating her old family home into a bed-and-breakfast during the icy dead of winter… As the house’s restoration commences, a shuttered art studio is revealed. Inside are paintings Tess’s late grandfather, beloved and celebrated artist Sebastian Bell, hid away for generations. But these appear to be the works of a twisted mind, almost unrecognizable as paintings she and others familiar with his art would expect.

Romance to horror ratio not for me
Revisado: 05-26-23
There is an audience for this, I'm sure, but I am not it. I used to enjoy Wendy Webb but it seems like every book has the ratio of romance rising and the horror, if you can call it that, dwindling (or maybe it's just that my tolerance for the ratio has lessened). The book is too slow if you're reading it for any kind of horror or spookery and the payoff too mild. I hate to say it, but those comparing her books to Hallmark Channel movies have it right. If that's your thing, enjoy!

Ok not great
Revisado: 07-08-22
Story pretty good. Writing ok but unspecial. Main character very annoying. Book too long. Narrator ok but raised voice to a fevered, urgent pitch way too often. I struggled a bit to stay with it because of these things so I listened at almost double speed.

Historia
History professor Juliet Harrington is an authority on 16th century mysticism and a long-time believer in the existence of the Almanac of Forbidden Wisdom, a potent spellbook. Legend insists was compiled in that period by a cabal of powerful occultists. Its magic is summoned only at disastrous cost, signalled by the Auguries. Juliet is convinced that the recent plague of disasters means someone reckless is using the book - and she has little time left to stop them.

good stuff here but overall meh
Revisado: 04-10-20
The narrator gave his all and I enjoyed him. The author writes well, no cliches or tired, gimmicky, repeated lines, but the book was slow which left me too restless to keep my interest. I finished the book but felt unsatisfied in the end.

Great book! Not a ghost story.
Revisado: 07-10-16
This book was long and I still very much enjoyed it. I think the pacing was delicately balanced... almost too slow but not because the author gave you a morsel often enough to create a near perfect slow build. I just wish it was a ghost story, which it's not and it's the primary reason I listened to the book, but I was not disappointed even still, which is saying something.
The male narrator was good with dialogue, bit straight narration was a bit labored. He had good inflection and everything, but he often sounded like he was teaching a history lesson rather than reading spooky fiction. He gets slightly better toward the end and he's not all that bad, but he might deter me from other books narrated by him in the future.

Historia
In this tantalizing tale of Victorian ghost stories and family secrets, timid, solitary librarian Gerard Freeman lives for just two things: his elusive pen pal Alice and a story he found hidden in his mother's drawer years ago. Written by his great-grandmother Viola, it hints at his mother's role in a sinister crime. As he discovers more of Viola's chilling tales, he realizes that they might hold the key to finding Alice and unveiling his family's mystery - or will they bring about his untimely death, as they seem to foretell?

Great
Revisado: 10-15-15
The Narrator is excellent and the story very good, though there are many stories within stories so sometimes it's challenging to keep track of who is who, especially in audio book format. I should have liked a little more story at the conclusion, but really, very good. the author is an excellent writer, not just because of plot, but also his eloquence of phrasing. Not once did I find the expressions tedious or unrealistic or overdramatised.

Great, if you like this kind of topic
Revisado: 09-05-15
I have to give this book four stars because it was well written and a good story, but unfortunately I didn't really enjoy it. That isn't the author's fault, however. It's because this book reads like an historical fiction romance, not a supernatural ghost story like I wanted.
A caution to those expecting this to be a creepy ghost story; nothing is creepy about this book and the ghostly elements in it are scarce. The book has a great twist but one I saw coming a mile away and didn't make up for the boredom I experienced waiting for the ghostly portion of this book to emerge.
It is a great story for those interested in a historical fiction romance vibe, set against a war backdrop and peppered with political statements (all of which bore me to tears in fiction) but will probably disappoint those looking for a supernatural thriller (like I was) such as those by Wendy Webb, John Harwood, and F.G. Cottam.
The narrator annoyed me to no end, but unfortunately I also have no objective reason to give for it. I simply didn't enjoy her voice or style but see no reason why others might not.
