I especially like the retelling of an old story from a different perspective. Making Sherlock imperfect and Moriarty misunderstood is a terrific premise. Great voicing of characters. Highly recommend.

Terrific historical fiction of a unique character: the son of a British colonel and Chinese woman who deals with his identity and its clash with others’ mistaken perception of him as “foreign.”
Great character development. Beautiful writing.

She wisely draws not only on European Christian traditions, but invoked pre-Christian rites, Judaism, as well as the importance of reflection and rituals to us as humans. The interspersing of her new fairy tales with autobiographical chapters and recipes is intimate, cozy, festive, and inspires feelings for the season. I’ve always been a fan of Winterson’s novels, but now I feel like she’s my friend.
