great story but poor ending

I listened with interest to this essay but became baffled as it became clear that it was going to end without any resolution. It's like I just read the first chapter of a great book only there is no book.

"The coming storm" sounds like a metaphor for some looming threat: global warming or maybe the dem's wave election. But I think it is the actual storms predicted by the US weather service.

The essay just ended with a story about a barn destroyed by a tornado. No metaphor, just a real barn and a real tornado.

Lacks the Promised "Why"

What would have made The Enlightenment better?

I wanted a book that answered the question "Why is this relevant?" or, more to my purpose, "How did The Enlightenment become Humanism?" Obviously you can't answer that without talking about what The Enlightenment IS, who contributed to it, what they thought and so on and so on. So I waded through all the "so on" but never got to the payoff. He could have made it much better by fulfilling the promise in the title: "And why it still matters." Or by leaving that part off the title (I only bought it for that part so I wouldn't have bought it -- the best book is the book you don't read that you wouldn't have liked).

Would you ever listen to anything by Anthony Pagden again?

I might but I will read all the reviews first. But doing a lot of research before reading a non-fiction book sounds like a lot more work than I want. So probably not.

What three words best describe Robert Blumenfeld’s performance?

Very Proper English

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More clarity on the distinct people with, perhaps fewer people highlighted.

What was most disappointing about Professor Ed Casey’s story?

I don't have a clear idea of who's who and what's what.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I admit that the narrator did as well as she could.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Confusion.

Any additional comments?

Yeah, nowhere in the description does it list the philosophers who were gone over. I had to look at the tiny photo of the cover to get their names so I can look them up on WikiPedia.

I get the feeling that this series is just cranking out books without any real concern about how hard it is to comprehend.

I was interested in economic philosophy but what this is is investment advice. No doubt very useful advice but not at all what I wanted.

What made the experience of listening to Descartes: An Introduction the most enjoyable?

The clarity of the man's thoughts are breathtaking, even after all these centuries! It's well read and the commentary is very good.

What does Jonathan Oliver and Roy McMillan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The book is brilliantly read but, truth be told, I mostly listen in the car and that would simply be impossible without readers.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Oh, definitely not. I love the fact that I could listen to it in sections and then muse on what was said for hours. It's pretty deep stuff!
