Complex interesting characters and epic story told with a wealth of fascinating information about India, British occupation, art, medicine, humor and the rituals of family life. Verghese tells a heartbreaking story with so much humanity it is ultimately life affirming.

Harold because he grew in self knowledge in the story and came to understand something about human nature which was both tragic and bleak yet also ordinary and hopeful.
