Historia
In a desperate attempt to prevent the artificial intelligence known as Control from seizing crucial information that could destroy all sentient life, Commander Michael Burnham donned the “Red Angel” time-travel suit and guided the USS Discovery into the future and out of harm’s way. But something has gone terribly wrong, and Burnham has somehow arrived in a place far different from anything she could have imagined - more than 900 years out of her time.

Loved It!
Revisado: 11-19-21
Great addition to the Star Trek universe! The author does a fantastic job of getting inside Michael’s thoughts and emotions, taking you through her development over the year of her time in the future without the rest of the Discovery crew. There was also some great exploration of life and people of this further future society.
My only nitpick is that the action scenes were written in an almost glossed over way, especially compared to the rich way everything else in the book is described and given time to be experienced.

Historia
Balancing a broad array of archaeological, botanical, and historical evidence, Fruit from the Sands presents the fascinating story of the origins and spread of agriculture across Inner Asia and into Europe and East Asia. Through the preserved remains of plants in archaeological sites, Robert N. Spengler III identifies the regions where our most familiar crops were domesticated and follows their routes as people carried them around the world. Vividly narrated, Fruit from the Sands explores how the foods we eat have shaped the course of human history.

Fascinating Subject, Bad Writing
Revisado: 08-31-21
This could have been a great read about a really interesting subject but unfortunately the author is clearly an academic, not a writer. Fully two thirds of this book is just lists of various plants and their scientific names. The author goes to great lengths to tell you where exactly each plant came from but not how they spread other than just saying the Silk Road. There is no context about the Silk Road itself and how that trade was conducted or anything of real interest. It’s a great reference book for academics but for the average person it’s just boring.

Great Read
Revisado: 02-15-21
The book was an eye opening read about the state of drug production and consumption in the world today. This is a must read for anyone wanting to understand the political issues surrounding drug policies.

Historia
Acclaimed actress Claire Danes burnishes an epic story of heroes, gods, and monsters in a groundbreaking translation of The Odyssey, the first great adventure story in the Western literary tradition. When the wily warrior-king Odysseus sets off for home after the Trojan War, he doesn’t realize this simple undertaking will become a perilous journey of 10 years. Beset at every turn, he encounters obstacles, detours, and temptations—both supernatural and human—while his wife Penelope fends off would-be suitors desperate to take the throne.

The Only Way to Read the Odyssey
Revisado: 11-23-20
This is without a doubt the best version of the Odyssey I’ve ever experienced. The translation was so simple and easy to understand, not weighted down with frilly, old fashioned words to make it seem like a Shakespeare play. You could really enjoy the story without having to stop and try to figure out what the characters were saying every other sentence.
And Claire Danes did a fantastic job of narrating the story. She really brought the characters to life and you could feel the emotion of their words.

Narration is Terrible
Revisado: 09-17-20
The story is okay for an old EU Star Wars novel. Very simplistic and if it were written today it would probably be categorized as a young adult novel or even children’s novel. There is no real character development but it is a fun little adventure.
Having said that, the person narrating needs to learn to slow down. When I first started listening, I thought I had accidentally set it on double speed because of how fast he was speaking. One sentence blends into another in a monotone way that is very off putting. The narrator puts no emphasis on important moments, just powering through everything. I wonder if he was given a specific time limit and had to speed read in order to fit within it. Also, he mispronounces Han’s name throughout the entire book.
