Historia
Jennifer McGaha never expected to own a goat named Merle, or to be rescuing opossums from her barn and calling it "date night." When Jennifer discovered that she and her husband owed back taxes - a lot of back taxes - her world changed. Now desperate to save money, they foreclosed on their beloved suburban home and moved their family to a 100-year-old cabin in a North Carolina holler. Soon enough, Jennifer's life began to more closely resemble the lives of her Appalachian ancestors than the life she experienced in her middle class upbringing.

Entertaining But Uneven
Revisado: 08-31-24
I appreciate a true story about hardship that is NOT brought on by bad luck, but instead brought on by reckless behavior. I liked the details and the despair -- and the gradual comeback. I did not like the narrator's performance because she sounded like an old woman. Her voice was clear and precise, but the phrasing was unmistakably that of an old woman. It was as if she was trying to sound like an old person. That was incongruous because the main character was probably between 35 and 50 during the events of the book. Way too much minutia about about goat mating and health problems. The book could have used a good climax, and there was an obvious one that went unexplored. The author should have sought out the climax, if only to tell us how it went.

Many people dream of escaping modern life, but most will never act on it. This is the remarkable true story of a man who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years, making this dream a reality—not out of anger at the world, but simply because he preferred to live on his own.

Not Particularly Profound But Interesting
Revisado: 04-08-24
I hoped that our hermit would produce some profound thoughts, but Christoper Knight is not a Tibetan Monk who retreated to a cave and came back with the secrets of life. He is also not the type of rugged individualist who hunted, fished, and relied on no one. Nope. He was an extremely talented burglar, and the fascination lies in his astounding ability to NOT get caught for 27 years.
He is also something of a science experiment. Can someone live, without a heating element or fire, in the Maine woods during winter? If Chris is to be believed, and I DO believe him, the answer is yes. He did it by enduring pure misery, walking around at 2:00 in the morning during the worst cold snaps and refusing to sleep. It's astounding. That's interesting enough for a book, and there are also some musings on the merits of solitude.
However, because Chris disappeared at the age of 20 and never had a close relationship (certainly not with a woman), it was a case of: He did not know what he was missing. That alone is incredibly sad. To forsake love is to not know the full joy of being human. But hey, that's my opinion and NOT the opinion of Chris Knight.
In many ways, Chris was lazy. In other ways, he was astonishingly motivated in his willingness to case cabins and summer camps for the sake of burglary. You can't be a true "folk hero" if you burglarize and freak a lot of people out. The ending of this book is touching and has unexpected emotional power. If it had ended in a slightly different way, it would have been a classic. As it stands, it's a document of an unusual person and the lengths he would go to remain alone.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Atheist Protagonist? Love It!
Revisado: 12-21-23
This novel starts off a bit slowly and with some confusion. However, it is well worth the ride. I love that the author does not shy away from the main character's staunch atheism. The adapted mini series, however, does shy away. The book has the courage of its convictions, but the Apple TV series does not. The finale of this book has a huge payoff that leaves you smiling, in spite of recent tragedy. Great book.

Geddy Lee is one of rock and roll's most respected bassists. Here for the first time is his account of life inside and outside the band.

Good Balance Of Personal And Professional
Revisado: 12-21-23
Geddy's narration is heartfelt, and he has a pleasant speaking voice. He takes a long detour into his parents' horrific holocaust experience. His parents were squarely in the bullseye of a malevolent history. You can skip this part, and Geddy even says, "if you want to skip, just go to chapter four." However, it's worth the harrowing ride. It's part of his identity.
There is quite a bit of minutia about technical aspects of recording, mixing, and mastering. There are so many options that it drives a perfectionist crazy. You hear a lot about the music and its toll on family and health. These are the costs. A band like Rush refused to put out bad music and they agonized over every note.
For those who thought Rush was not part of the stereotypical world of rock n roll drug use, you find out that you were WRONG. Cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana were prominent in Geddy's 20s, but fortunately not heroine or meth.
One thing that's absent is any mention of groupies or sex. Geddy says at one point that girls/young women did not go to Rush concerts in the early days, and by the time they did, it was "too late". All band members were married fairly young. Was he being coy here? I don't know. There is no mention of fornication with groupies.
The loving descriptions of Rush songs are mostly there. Your favorites may not be his favorites, but it motivates you to go listen to various songs that Geddy thought were amazing. The heartbreaking Neil Peart tragedies are explored, as well as Neil's death. Geddy's voice trembles as he reads, and it is incredibly emotional. Gershon Eliezer Weinrib has had an amazing life. It's not over, but his moments on stage are few and far between. If you're a Rush fan, this book is indispensable.

Historia
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Emotional Payoff Could Have Been Stronger
Revisado: 08-23-23
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, the racism seems exaggerated. The only thing worse than exaggerated racism is to ponder the fact that it might NOT be exaggerated. The descriptions of music are sublime. For those of us who love listening and performing music, the language is luxurious. One of the main themes is that no one actually LISTENS to what Ray has to say. Ray explains and they just repeat the question. It's maddening and we feel his frustration.
One of the conflicts could have been resolved in a more emotionally satisfying way. I can't say what it was, but we were waiting for the payoff and it never came. That said, there is redemption and other "payoffs" that are satisfying. There are some truly unbelievable plot actions that should have been left out. I'm talking about the trip to Serbia, but I digress. Worth a listen!

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

After the horrendous "The Reckoning", I was thinking Grisham had lost his touch. This is a long book, layered and fascinating. It has a satisfying ending and is compelling all the way through. Impressive!

Not A Compelling Story AT ALL
Revisado: 06-23-23
I gave this one three hours of its 17-hour run time and gave up. I had to ask to "return" the book since it said "not eligible" for return, but Audible honored my request. This story is a massive misstep for the normally solid Grisham. The whole crux of this story is the "WHY" of the murder. And you know what? The why is lame.
I grabbed the book off the rack of the book store to check on the "WHY" and basically said, "You have got to be kidding." The Boys From Biloxi is fantastic, but this is a waste of time. Big disappointment.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. I'll Take The Manson Family Over The Sacklers
Revisado: 04-25-23
This is a compelling listen with strong narration. If you are looking for stories of opioid abuse and its toll on society, this is not the book. This book is an exhaustive expose on the miserable, greedy, unethical, and deadly Sackler family. It's a story of corruption by the FDA and their willingness to simply take the Sackler family at its word. "No significant threat of abuse" from oxycontin, they said, and the FDA said, "Yep, ok." Any studies to back that up? Nope.
Give people a taste of oxycodone (main ingredient in oxycontin) even though it's TWICE AS POTENT as morphine? Yeah, let's do it. The Sackler family was way way worse than the Manson family. The narrator is excellent. I would have preferred more stories about the horrific toll of the ongoing opioid epidemic, but I suppose that's another book. This book is about astonishing greed, and I mean astonishing. AFTER they had made literally billions, they kept going even as the deaths spiraled out of control. Unconscionable.

Few bands are as shrouded in the murky haze of rock mythology as The Doors, and parsing fact from fiction has been a virtually impossible task. But now, after 50 years, The Doors’ notoriously quiet guitarist is finally breaking his silence to set the record straight. Set the Night on Fire is packed with never-before-told stories from The Doors’ most vital years, and offers a fresh perspective on the most infamous moments of the band’s career.

Honest And Interesting
Revisado: 12-26-22
Robby leaves nothing out, but admits he does not remember everything. His running joke is; "Hey, it was the 60s..." I have a new appreciation for Robby's contribution to this amazing band.
I had no idea Robby was a heroine addict and well could have died from an overdose. Keep in mind this was largely AFTER The Doors and after he had basically said he would never do THAT, but he did that and then some. We get a portrait of Jim Morrison that was "nice, intelligent, and gentle" while sober and crazy while drunk. We also realize that Jim was totally unmotivated by money, insisting that the doors split all money four ways. We hear about the awful court battles between Robby, Ray, and John that were so unfortunate. Anyway, great listen.

Thought Provoking On The Nature Of The Mind
Revisado: 12-26-22
I heard a podcast with the author and he confirms...This is not "The Secret" whereby you merely hope/think/wish and it comes true. This is a book about the nature of the mind and how it influences your actions -- mostly with a buddhist mindset.
I listened to the book and loved it. The very end is a slight misstep, but 99% excellent. It's well worth the time. The author is an avowed atheist and does not believe in the occasional supernatural elements of buddhism. Thing is, buddhism is fairly objective and can be practiced without belief in things that have no evidence.
