Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Immigrant experience in about 1900 NYC. Even mythical creatures from different cultures can meet up. I found the colorful descriptions and nuance of Syrian and Jewish communities very engrossing.

Historia
In Navola, a city-state dominated by a handful of influential families, business is power, and power is everything. For generations, the di Regulai family—merchant bankers with a vast empire—has nurtured tendrils that stretch to the farthest reaches of the known world. And though they claim not to be political, their wealth has bought cities and toppled kingdoms. Soon, Davico di Regulai will be expected to take the reins of power from his father and demonstrate his mastery of the games of Navolese diplomacy. But in Navola, strange and ancient undercurrents lurk behind the gilt and grandeur.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

much insight on re-framing current chaos
Revisado: 11-18-22
I thought I would find his holocaust xp too heavy. Not so. As a person with chronic illness and pain, the pressure to "pay my way" or earn my right to be treated with dignity & the impersonal devaluation of my suffering by western medicine - is reframed yet again. It's not FAFO or "lifestyle choice" or personal shortcomings. Unavoidable suffering ; the "Provisonal Life" .
There is a value - honing your spirit. It's something I will need to revisit often in order to waste less time naval gazing in the time I have left.

Historia
With lyrical prose and striking verse, beloved poet Nikita Gill (Fierce Fairytales, Wild Embers) uses the history of Ancient Greece and beyond to explore and share the stories of the mothers, warriors, creators, survivors, and destroyers who shook the world. In pieces that burn with empathy and admiration for these women, Gill unearths the power and glory of the very foundations of mythology and culture that have been too-often ignored or pushed aside. Gill's poetry and stories weave old and forgotten tales of might and love into an empowering collection.

goddess powers
Revisado: 06-29-22
In these times of accelerated atrocities on a scale never imaginable, these parables may help you to reconnect to your innate passion for justice; ability to cultivate restorative actions and a kindess for your community and sore heart. Reminders about the powers of love in times of chaos.
The narration is slow and rich like caramel. A pace that allows your back brain to chew and absorb fully while your front brain is entertained.

the Expanse series wasn't big enough (!) to include these colorful bits of our fave characters plus a brief commentary at the end of each that gives a glimpse into process. I appreciate the choice of the final - seems our reality is accelerating crisis, too.

Historia
With temperatures rising and the risk of disasters growing, our world is increasingly vulnerable. Most people see disasters as freak, natural events that are unpredictable and unpreventable. But that simply isn’t the case - disasters are avoidable, but when they do strike, there are strategic ways to manage the fallout.

reality check
Revisado: 02-09-22
I search for stuff like this because we need new language to explain, describe, & deal with overlapping disasters that is our NOW.
Proactive measures to mitigate the needless suffering that previous decisions & mindsets have caught us all up in.
We're in the early stage of climate extremes & we're falling apart already. We can't volunteer our way out of this.
Our communities are not built to withstand these overlapping extreme events and this is what the State & Fed gov is supposed to cover.
FEMA has been hamstrung & is suffering from institutional inertia. Homeland Security continues to make us less safe.
Disaster Capitalism is escalating disparity with gov stamp of approval.
I grew up in the 70's in the Bay Area - lots of eco stuff in grade school curriculum & access to open space beyond my tract housing.
Grew up seeing Love Canal on our console tv...Quakes, drought, & the effects of Reaganomics burn thru the middle class.
That life - stable decent home, robust education, a vehicle or two & savings is but dream of a standard of life (on a single salary!) most won't get to if they slip below 650 credit score.
Now I live rural (priced out & worn out) in a small town. Since 2015, we've been hit with bigger & more extreme wildfires & now pandemic that is far from over.
As a disabled native Californian, I live these frustrations & barriers daily that make things harder than they need to be.
It's adapt or die (badly) time.
No one is coming to save us- we need to save ourselves.

Historia
Jack Shade has a secret, and this hidden part of his past sends him on a journey through time and space and a great number of metaphysical doorways. From the cozy poker table in the 11th-floor apartment of the Hôtel de Rêve Noire to the ethereal Forest of Souls to the faded houses along the Gold River, Jack flows in and out of this world. Even when his own duplicate hires him to kill himself, Jack is mercury in motion. The Fissure King collects the four existing Jack Shades novellas and shows us Jack's final trick - one last story that finally reveals Jack's true nature.

gritty & dark yet little gore etc.
Not the usual tropes for magic users.
Much sympathy for have nots in an analog world.
Comes back to the theme of the choices or options among hard ones. Something a single parent living hand-to-mouth can relate to in this world.

not your usual future space story
Revisado: 01-28-22
Another exploration of space in speculative fiction that doesn't gloss or glamorize space faring.
It is a murder mystery at heart. Some commentary on the toxic nature of living in an amoral transaction-based society & consequences thereof.
Ghosts, regrets, problem solving under duress No moralizing soap box in this book, just hard decisions to make with overlapping crisis & interesting blend of personalities of the characters.
Like most tech, it's great when it works as expected but demonic when when it doesn't.
Narration is excellent. There's some really harrowing parts (again, space is trying to kill you at every turn) where I may have had to step back & yet lured on by the hypnotic deep bass & surreal calmness of his voice.

final(?) book in my fave space opera
Revisado: 12-17-21
Screaming Firehawks & like-minded humans will both devour and savor it.
As a GenXer, some of the themes I find the most troubling about our species is in play here. How do we mature as individuals & a species?
The narration is tops. No need for bells n whistles of a radio play because the voice of each main player is distinct. Just listening to it all, it is amazing how seemless.
