Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Historia
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Insightful!
Revisado: 11-25-23
David Brooks does an in depth job of delving into how to be more empathetic and really see/hear/know someone. It is all the more poignant because he is not naturally inclined to be that kind of friend/listener. I’m going to listen again to let more of it seep in!

Moving Telling of an Inspiring Mans Difficult but Hooeful Story
Revisado: 06-19-21
The telling is vivid and real and should be common knowledge in our world. Here is mans inhumanity against man but also a glimpse of strength and courage on the other end.
Tracy Kidder writes this very well. I personally think his voice is not an easy one to listen to as narrator but that may just be me.

Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. A must read for Americans
Revisado: 08-12-20
Our population has evolved as more and more migrants have entered the USA over the years. This well written story helps bring into focus some of the human side of the people who have come to the US with hopes for a new, full and safe life. It sparks empathy and compassion for the difficulty their migration represents in terms of their challenging personal lives. It makes me want to learn Spanish and figure out how to help.

In the years since his daughter Vanessa moved to America to become a professor of philosophy, Alan Querry has never been to visit. He has been too busy at home in northern England, holding together his business as a successful property developer. His younger daughter, Helen - a music executive in London - hasn’t gone, either, and the two sisters, close but competitive, have never quite recovered from their parents’ bitter divorce and the early death of their mother. But then Vanessa’s new boyfriend sends word that she has fallen into a severe depression and that he’s worried for her safety....

Beautifully chosen words

Sometimes one feels that an author is reaching for the right words... in Upstate this was absolutely not the case. Each word was beautifully chosen so all the descriptions felt natural and true. Reading it was like watching a painter create a masterpiece!

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Astounding true story
Revisado: 07-30-18
This was a well documented account of a surprisingly true story of what seems to be pure deceit. Most amazing is the number of people who were led astray by someone who appears to have been amazingly charismatic. We need more of those people in the world working for the good rather than their own personal gain.

Historia
He's been called the best in the world at the mental game of tennis. Brad Gilbert's strokes may not be pretty, but looks aren't everything. He has beaten the tour's biggest names - all by playing his "ugly" game. Now, in Winning Ugly, Gilbert teaches recreational players how to win more often without necessarily even changing their strokes. The key to success, he says, is to become a better thinking player - to recognize, analyze, and capitalize. That means out-thinking opponents before, during, and after a match - forcing him or her to play your game.
