It was okay; not the right narrator

Narrator really hurt this book for me. He was far too stiff. The story was alright, I guess I expected something a little different.

Whimsical, wonderful, ridiculous notion of a magical baker saving the city. Great subtle world Building. Highly recommend

Liked it.

This first novel of the series felt a bit like Pratchett was stretching his fingers and playing. Seeing what the world was about. Seeing what characters would emerge. It bopped around a lot which made it hard to follow, but I am still going to march to the next book in the Discworld journey.

Really enjoyed this book. What I might've loved most of all was the setting: the chill Scottish countryside and the winter sea, violent and fierce. She made the setting feel so alive for me, I still picture the dark sea, the biting wind, the land as it crests and dips, the green hills. Definitely want more books set in that kind of landscape.

The author told the dual POV story well, too, which is not easy. I immediately liked the characters and enjoyed their stories, both present and past. It was a very fun twist to have that ancestral connection and memory. The coziness of the small town was a plus. I also enjoyed learning more about Jacobite history.

Also, the narrator was AMAZING. She did all the voices so incredibly well. A good narrator is rare.

I always know when I set an audiobook to an increased speed, it's usually not a good sign. This one wasn't quite a DNF, but it was just lacking something, or many things. It felt predictable, and not in a good way. Was it flat? maybe? Having a hard time pinning it down. I just wanted it to end.

Saving graces were Dorian and Moira.

I feel like I need to let this sink in a little, as I just finished today. It will probably sink into me like spores and slowly change me...

I loved the atmospheric quality of the book, the rich descriptions of nature dripping off the page. I loved how quickly things changed and then how slowly they did. I loved how the book ended and can't imagine what the next books will even contain.

I'm betting this one is going to sit with me.

How to do "immortal" right

Our protagonist, Tom, has a rare condition in which he ages much, much slower than others. In fact, he's 400+ years old and he only looks about 40. He clings to life because he knows he has a daughter who is like him, still alive after hundreds of years, searching.

He interacts with different major history figures (like Shakespeare, Captain Cook and F. Scott Fitzgerald) that make it a lot of fun. He learns all types of languages and hobbies and skills throughout these hundreds of years. Still, he remains human. He's bored, he's searching, he's feeling. It's a very moving book that reminds us to live right now, to feel instead of fear, and to do what is right.

This is how to do "immortal" right. I recently DNF'd a book with a similar premise (though instead of it being a genetic condition, it was a demon's curse) that simply wandered around, picked up no hobbies, and was so flat and self-pitying. I was nervous when I started How to Stop Time, but was pleasantly surprised when it did it right.

This woman knows how to write and wake up the inner wild within me! An intense book about wolves, grief, and sisterhood. The scenes stay with you and haunt you. And now I want to go back to school and study ecology or something to try to save the world and its animals.

Simply love these books

"Say one thing for Logen Ninefingers, say he's a fighter."

I simply love these books, even if they are near 500 pages each. Abercrombie's voice is unique, excellent, and full of humor. His writing drips with rich imagery, always relevant to the scene/setting/mood/character at hand. The characters jump off the page. They feel real, with actual flaws and mistakes, struggle through the sh*t they call life. And the arcs! The character arcs are masterfully woven, happening so subtly and realistically that at the end you're like wow, he's now x.

Jumping right into the next one.

Great for young adults

Such a fantastic book for young adults, especially teenagers navigating first love. So many young women settle for what they think they deserve. Any attention they get is good attention so it doesn't matter if he kinda sucks. This book does well to show how you ought to be treated, how to start valuing yourself, and evaluate others who you're in a relationship with.

It was a little slow to start, but once the contest started and the family dynamics were in, I loved it. The sense of the big family was real, the comradery, the drama, the chaos, the love -- it was dynamic and special.

Definitely will read more from Ireland. I'd even love her to do an Adult novel so she can unleash the full unfiltered hilarity that you might spot on her Twitter account.
