Good story.

The characters were charming, irritating, intuitive, and dense. A well constructed story that held my interest to the end.

What a surprising and gripping story. Very well acted by professionals who made it feed like you were listening in on private conversations. I want more by this team of author/actors.

What's with the music?
Revisado: 12-16-18
The music in this book makes absolutely no sense. It doesn't match the mood of the text and is so distracting that I feel angry when it starts. Fire the person who came up with this idiotic idea.
Otherwise, the book would be good.

Historia
This is the most distinguished novel that has come out of South Africa in the 20th century, and it is one of the most important novels of the modern era. Cry, the Beloved Country is in some ways a sad book; it is an indictment of a social system that drives native races into resentment and crime; it is a story of Fate, as inevitable, as relentless, as anything of Thomas Hardy's. Beautifully wrought with high poetic compassion, Cry, the Beloved Country is more than just a story, it is a profound experience of the human spirit.

I have read (listened to) this moving story three times and am left each time with sadness and hope. The main character is beautifully drawn and easy to relate to as a parent. These are good people trapped in a bad culture.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I hate to criticize a reader as I imagine it must be hard to do this job but this was really the worst reader I've ever listened to.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jack Brown’s performances?
No.

What would have made A Kiss from Mr. Fitzgerald better?
I so wanted to enjoy this book but the plot is trite and the narrator is horrible. All of the characters have the same annoying nasal voice except the main character. Nothing could save this.

What was most disappointing about Loreth Anne White’s story?
This author uses every cliche in the book. It is terrible writing.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tanya Eby?
The book does not deserve to be narrated.

Historia
When John Heppel, a visiting writer to Lochdubh, first proposes forming a writers' circle, the idea is met with much enthusiasm from local residents. However, once the classes get underway, attendance quickly falters due to one undeniable fact: John Heppel is a long-winded, consummate bore. But is dullness a motive for murder? Hamish Macbeth wouldn't ordinarily think so. So when Heppel is found dead, Hamish begins looking for deeper meaning in the writer's stories.

What does Graeme Malcolm bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Graeme Malcolm is one of my favorite readers.
Any additional comments?
Hamish Macbeth mysteries are consistently entertaining and the characters are familiar after listening to so many. Graeme Malcolm is the best reader for this series, his voices and accents bringing Lochdubh to life.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Listening to this makes me wonder about McDermid. This is the most graphic sexual violence I've ever heard and I couldn't finish the book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Editing failure
Revisado: 07-23-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
While I have loved every book narrated by Graeme Malcolm, this one could have used some editing. Long pauses and swallowing sounds were very distracting. Otherwise, this is another fun adventure of Hamish Macbeth.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Hamish
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Edited out the swallowing sounds.
