To keep it short, I enjoyed the book, but there were tough patches for me to get through.

In retrospect what I enjoyed the most was the characters and when the story became its own. What bogged down the experience for me is how heavily this story draws from Star Wars and Harry Potter. I know it is easy to draw comparisons with every magic school book and Harry Potter, but this goes a bit beyond just that. Young prodigy finds magical world hidden just under his nose, mean black-haired teacher, dean a little too chummy with prodigy, and magical tournaments, it starts to get a bit too on-the-nose with how much the author pulls from his inspirations.
Also mitosomes, mitosomes, mitosomes. It was a bit annoying and eye-rolling when the Star Wars prequels tried to get people to accept medichlorians as the basis for all force powers, so just like the author's inspiration, it is equally as assuming and eye-rolling here. It's basically all people talk about in the school and just gets boring when everyone keeps measuring their dicks with their count.

Wow. This sequel took almost every problem I had with the first book and fixed it beautifully.
The characters were given slower moments to shine themselves. The story was given time to breathe instead of a constant run from massive problem to massive problem.
I can't wait for the next sequel and any more from this author!

I very much enjoyed this book. it was a great experience from start to finish. My only gripe, as minor as it may be, is that I enjoyed the book when it was smaller. The plot has naturally grown into full-scale conflicts with some weight behind it suggesting a much larger world beyond. But I guess I liked it when it was smaller and more intimate.
This book has definitely put thr relationships on the backburner for epic wars. Planning and executing a war essentially took up half of the book, and after chapter and chapter of just killing, I found myself missing when the characters hung out or were even romantic with eachother.
I'm still excited for the sequel, but I do hope to see more of the characters together than this book.

I went into this book with an open mind and high hopes. The beginning started off great with intriguing stations and characters along the way of the plot. However it took me about half the book to realize that that was all you were going to get. Artyom travels from station to station and meets new people on the way, nothing else. Artyom is a blank slate at the beginning with no true opinions or desires and ends the exact same. Countless stations showing the extremes of what the human race has become leave no impact on him.
What you get in this book is clearly segmented chapters that do not further the story or the characters in any way. Travel to new station, meet new character, lose new character, arrive at station. Rinse and repeat. When the allure of new stations wanes as nothing comes of them in any way, you're left with nothing. You know the characters you met will not show up again, you know the stations will not pursue Artyom, so there is no reason the plot needs to move forward. The plot is the flimsiest drive I've experienced. The author sets up and describes landmarks far more interestingly, again, piquing your interest, just to do nothing with it.

If you love the Metro game series or enjoy post apocalyptic stories, do yourself a favor and don't read this.

To quickly sum it up, great story, fantastic world building, but everything goes way too fast. It's like the plot jumps from event to event with little to no time inbetween. I would have really liked more quiet moments between characters where they could just talk to each other.
But all in all, very good book. I have far more positives than negatives. I'll be looking forward to the next in the series.

the pacing of this book was great, everything seemed to flow well in this interesting world. I would recommend reading this book to any enjoyer of fantasy.

My biggest annoyance, and probably my only, is how repetitive some things are in the book. For example, six or even ten times over the author heavily describes the effect of a transformation like its the first time we have ever seen it. It started to grind on me.
But honestly that's about it. I would definitely read a sequel. Would recommend.

This book was a good read don't get me wrong, it was just nothing stood out.
All the characters were what you expect. None of them really developed as the story went on. Nothing challenged them or altered the reader's perspective.
The pacing felt way too fast for my taste. within 24 hrs of meeting someone brand new they're practically ready to sign contracts and turn over all their belongings to someone who waltzed into town the other day. And by the end of the story with everything that was done and all the relationships that started you would aalmost guess 5 or 6 months have passed, but nope, it was barely a week.
It's a fine book, but I can't say I'm jumping to read the sequel.

Good, but Strange Pacing

Decent book held back by awkward pacing. It feels like a weird mixture of break neck pace to stop the apocalypse followed up by the characters feeling like they can just kick back and relax. It gave a weird feeling when the romance would usurp the pace and how all characters can put all worries and death aside.
All in all, it's not bad, a decent read for anyone looking for a fantasy story.

Those are the best words I can come up with. I went into this book with high hopes since the reviews were mostly very positive.
The world is interesting. the side characters are interesting, the magic system is interesting. So how the hell do you get this bland and boring story? My best answer is the two mains are just so awful. They are simply tools to get the plot moving who just accept everything that happens to them and want for nothing else. Their romance was awful. I felt nothing for them and couldn't care less when they finally got together. On top of that. the conclusion with the side characters were just insulting. They received a couple sentences of their off-screen story and that's it.
Would not recommend. Don't read this.

This book took the foundation the first book built and built off of it in an amazing way. Stakes were higher and threats were built and dealt with in a very satisfying manner that made me excited for the third.
It still got bogged down with the numbers, though a bit less, but never used the numbers as a crutch to hide poor character development. I enjoyed all the characters and their arcs, though one was given a bit too much attention at the expense of the rest.
Highly recommend.
